“I don’t want to have to start flapping my arms to get air,” Diane Sawyer joked.
At the Museum of Modern Art’s 40th annual Party in the Garden, the garden in question felt more like a sauna than a cool oasis, but that didn’t stop New Yorkers such as Agnes Gund, David Rockefeller, Evelyn and Leonard Lauder, Eliza Bolen, Samantha Rosen, Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy from buttoning up in black tie to mingle with artists Alex Katz, Chuck Close and Olafur Eliasson, among others.
“I’m heading inside. I don’t want to have to start flapping my arms to get air,” joked Diane Sawyer, whose husband, Mike Nichols, was being honored alongside Donald B. Marron.
After dinner many of the grown-ups fled home to the air-conditioning, leaving the youngsters to the outdoor after-party where rapper M.I.A. performed an energetic set. She had reason to be happy—she was sporting a huge diamond courtesy of fiancé Benjamin Brewer, also a musician and the son of Seagram heir and Warner Music Group head Edgar Bronfman.
The next week, the arty crowd was back in action for the Whitney Museum’s annual Art Party, cochaired for a second time by Max and Lubov Azria. “I wanted to improve it; get more people,” explained Max, whose brand, BCBG MaxAzria Group, sponsored the evening. And so, gone was last summer’s hippie-chic decor, and in its place was a huge disco ball, under which a crowd including Gretchen Mol, Jason Wu, Joy Bryant, Monet Mazur, Eli Manning, Barbara Bush, Coco Rocha, Sean Lennon, Elettra Wiedemann and Lou Doillon tossed back drinks.
Meanwhile, cochair Rachel Bilson was scoping out works by Cecily Brown, Taryn Simon and Will Cotton that were on display for the silent auction. “I respect what they do so much, and I want to get to know them better,” she said.
