“I shall be screaming from the sidelines—if that’s allowed,” said Natalie Imbruglia.
“I grew up with polo. My father and brother are professional players, and she’s dated a few,” explained Jemma Kidd, giving a playful nod to her friend Sarah Woodhead. The chums were guests at the 24th Cartier International Polo Tournament, the annual event at Windsor Great Park that is a fixture of the British summer season.
Before watching the English and Australian teams duke it out, the glam crowd, including Emma Watson, Rosamund Pike, actress Margo Stilley, It girl Isabella Anstruther-Gough-Calthorpe, and Salman Rushdie (with aspiring writer Aita Ighodaro on his arm), dined on lobster and Welsh lamb in Cartier’s tent, decked with Elsa Schiaparelli–pink Cartier flags and chandeliers covered in swan feathers. “I shall be screaming from the sidelines—if that’s allowed,” said polo newbie Natalie Imbruglia.
Actually, cheering was the least of the organizers’ worries: Three exuberant streakers interrupted proceedings with a dash across the field in plain view of Prince Charles, who later presented the Coronation Cup to the English team.
Earlier in the summer, Europeans rocked around the clock at an array of functions. In one night, the Kills performed at a Longchamp party at the Elysée Montmartre in front of Riley Keough, Margherita Missoni, Lou Doillon and Stella Tennant; Mark Ronson and Duran Duran brought back the Eighties at a soirée for Smirnoff at La Cigale. Attendees included Eva Mendes, singer Micky Green and actress Emilie Dequenne. And at the opening of Mario Testino’s latest exhibition, “Obsessed by You,” at Phillips de Pury, Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Tom Ford, Giles Deacon, Brooke de Ocampo and Trudie Styler sipped bubbly served by bare-chested waiters. “I bought the image of Kate Moss, and I’m going to hang it on the wall of my office,” said Topshop honcho Sir Philip Green, referring to a photo of the model—and Topshop designer—holding a cigarette.
