Summer’s swan song came courtesy of Rufus Wainwright, who gave a concert at the Watermill Center in the Hamptons to benefit Robert Wilson’s performing arts center. Calvin Klein, Daphne Guinness and Amanda Hearst picnicked on the lawn as Wainwright, his mother, Kate McGarrigle, his aunt Anna McGarrigle and his sister, Martha, played a folkie set.
“We rehearsed this morning,” said Wainwright. But there were still a few kinks to be worked out. “I have a plan, Mother,” he chided, when his mom started in late on one particular tune. “Don’t f--- it up.”
Just three days later the New York Fashion Week party train was full steam ahead. Photographer Ben Watts kicked things off with the opening of his first exhibit, “Big Up!” at Milk Gallery. His mom, Miv, flew in from England for the event, and his sister, Naomi, complimented her brother’s prowess behind the lens. She admitted she doesn’t always enjoy being his subject. “It’s not easy being sexy in front of your brother,” she said, mingling among the crowd that also included Joshua Jackson, Sean Avery, model Sasha Pivovarova and Cornelia Guest.
The following night MAC hosted a gathering for its spokeswoman, Fergie, and DSquared’s Dan and Dean Caten at Serge Becker’s new joint, Café Select, attended by Jacquetta Wheeler and Natasha Bedingfield. While they waited an hour for
Fergie to show, guests nibbled on rich veal and spaetzle.
At Bobo in the West Village, dinner was on Charlize Theron and Stuart Townsend, who celebrated men’s wear line Benjamin Bixby by André Benjamin (aka OutKast’s André 3000). Festivities began with a party at Barneys New York, but Theron practiced restraint. “I don’t shop for Stuart,” said the actress. “He is an individual with his own look.”
