D.C.’s socialites face off.
Rival Parties
February 2009
In keeping with Barack Obama’s theme of bringing together adversaries,
dueling D.C. socialites Buffy Cafritz and Rima Al-Sabah have vowed to
attend each other’s back-to-back inaugural parties. It’s an impressive
act of peacemaking, given that Cafritz criticized Al-Sabah’s
entertaining style in a prickly 2007 Vanity Fair article about the
demise of social Washington. Especially since the public dis only
heightened the competition between the two hostesses: Cafritz lined up
five high-profile cohosts, most notably Vernon and Ann Jordan, for her
event, while Al-Sabah, whose husband is the ambassador of Kuwait, lined
up seven, including Washington Post chairman Donald Graham, Mayor Adrian
Fenty and local architect Leo Daly.
