Diane Kruger Is a Sparkling Film Festival Empress at Deauville

Well, pretty much anyone in the world of fashion and film is at the Venice Film Festival this week. And if they’re not in Venice, chances are, they’re in Telluride, like Emma Stone (who jetted off after the premiere of her film La La Land in Venice this week), or in Deauville, like Diane Kruger and Chloë Grace Moretz, for the French city’s annual American film festival. It kicked off Friday night with markedly less fanfare than its Italian counterpart, but Kruger still dressed up for the occasion. She’s had a busy slate of premieres this summer, most recently turning out for a round of appearances for Alice Winocour’s Disorder, but now she’s back to promote Infiltrator at the festival. So far, so good.

Why: Elie Saab designs very beautiful gowns. It’s kind of his thing. He’s occasionally been criticized for being a bit one-note, but when a Saab look works, it works. His latest round of designs for the Fall 2016 couture season elevated his classical silhouettes with quirky details (a dress designed in the pattern of the Chrysler building; another embroidered with swallows that looked just about ready to lift off of the gown and fly away), and here, Kruger picks up on that quirk and runs with it. How better to make a dress already embellished with crystal hearts stand out even more than with a few odd accessories? Between her Charlotte Olympia box clutch, complete with the designer’s trademark gold spider enclosure, and a single hoop earring with a gold fang dangling from its circumference, Kruger has the pretty-edgy look on lock.
