The photographer Guy Bourdin was known for his unabashed use of makeup: slashes of pink blush, bruiselike eye shadow, red nail polish standing in for blood as it trickled from one particularly unfortunate model’s mouth. “Guy was a major inspiration in my life,” says the beauty mogul François Nars. “Even at 10 years old, I would tear his images out of magazines and put them on my walls.” Nars never got the chance to work with the legendary lensman, but he collaborated with the Bourdin estate for his new holiday collection, creating 17 shades based on Bourdin’s palette. The natural look this is not: Shadows like the cobalt Wishful Thinking and the plummy purple Rage are so bright, they appear electrified; blush hues range from intense magenta to wild orange-red; and the nail polish and lipsticks are deeply, frankly scarlet. “If Bourdin were alive today, I would love for him to shoot our campaigns,” Nars says. This is the next best thing.
