If any director can turn the homecoming of a family’s wayward black sheep into a music-filled reunion alive with comedy and pathos, it’s Jonathan Demme. Think 2008’s Rachel Getting Married—in reverse. In Ricki and the Flash (out August 7), Meryl Streep plays an aging rocker who hasn’t really been a parent for some time when her daughter—played by Streep’s actual offspring Mamie Gummer—needs help through a difficult time.
