St. Regis Aspen’s 40-Million Facelift
In a renovation worthy of, and inspired by, business magnate and St. Regis founder Jacob Astor, award-winning architect and interior designer Lauren Rottet gave the 13-year-old hotel a Gilded Age overhaul. “When I do a hotel, I think of it more as set design,” says Rottet, whose work also includes the Surrey Hotel in Manhattan. “I write a script in my head, complete with characters, and I start making sets for those characters to play off of.” In this case, she imagined a grand Aspen retreat for the Astor family and 179-guest-rooms-worth of their closest friends.

“Some people ask me why I would put something like the urns and
Chinoiserie cabinets in Aspen. When I do a space, I try to not make
everything look like Aspen or Arizona. At that point in time when I was
writing my script, late 1800s, the family might have a mountain manor
but they also might have traveled to China and those pieces would have
shown up in their homes.”
