St. Regis Aspen’s 40-Million Facelift
In a renovation worthy of, and inspired by, business magnate and St. Regis founder Jacob Astor, award-winning architect and interior designer Lauren Rottet gave the 13-year-old hotel a Gilded Age overhaul. “When I do a hotel, I think of it more as set design,” says Rottet, whose work also includes the Surrey Hotel in Manhattan. “I write a script in my head, complete with characters, and I start making sets for those characters to play off of.” In this case, she imagined a grand Aspen retreat for the Astor family and 179-guest-rooms-worth of their closest friends.

“The hotel before was one color of wood. The bulk of the hotel stayed
sort of a warm wood color, but then where the focal points are: the bar
[above], the reception desk, and the library, we switched to gray
cerused wood. It is as if the family might have been influenced by the
grays in Paris. The snowflakes here are by Mike and Doug Starn. No two
prints are alike and they had to approve the exact order in which they
were hung. I tried to work with local galleries. People in Aspen are
very proud of their community.”
