What She's Been Wearing: Michelle Obama

blog_michelle_ceremony.jpgI thought that gold was a fabulous color choice for Mrs. Obama today--it's both victorious and regal. Isabel Toledo, who designed the embroidered coat, cardigan and dress was a great choice as she's truly a fashion insider's designer. While watching the ceremony, we were all wondering whether she was wearing jewelry (real or costume) or whether the sparkle at her neck was part of the dress; regardless, we thought she looked great. **Ed's note: We've since learned it was a Victorian paste brooch (see below) from the Carole Tanenbaum Vintage Collection, which is carried at the Chicago boutique Ikram. **blog_wu_04.jpg

blog_michelle_narcisso.jpgIt's obvious why Michelle (here on Sunday at the Opening Inaugural Celebration) has been loyal to Narciso Rodriguez ; she looks fantastic in his body-conscious designs.  It seems the two share an appreciation for an updated classic shape. And I loved the  combination of black and camel.

blog_michelle_jcrew.jpgAt the Monday night kids' concert, Michelle wore what appeared to be the same mustard yellow J. Crew cardigan she wore on The Tonight Show back in October. We love that she's not afraid to reach into her closet and pull out something that she knows works for her.

Over the past few days of inaugural events, we've seen plenty of winter coats--many boring, some fussy (think Laura Bush's today).  The Zero + Maria Cornejo black cashmere coat Michelle wore on her train trip to DC (below) has a playfully artistic shape. It's nice to see something with a little youth and energy.

Thumbnail image for blog_michelle_coat.jpgMrs. Obama wears rich color so well and seems to have an innate sense of what looks good on her. Although she's obviously getting a little help from a stylist (as anyone in her position should), she's clearly not blindly led by someone else's opinion.
