Jane's Nose Job

Ah, Spring is here. How can I tell? By the droves of new fragrances landing on my desk...

blog_fragrances_01.jpgAnnick Goutal Un Matin d'Orage: Its name translates loosely to "after the storm," and it does have that magical rainy garden smell. The unusual combination of lemon, ginger and perilla (which smells a little like anise) with a jasmine-based floral base is definitely worth a whiff. $80, to pre-order now at Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus

blog_fragrances_dkny.jpgDKNY's Be Delicious Fresh Blossom: I know, the name is a mouthful, no pun intended. But if the many fans of Karan's apple-y Be Delicious fragrance are any indication, Fresh Blossom will go down easy. Like the original, it's heavy on the apple, but mixed with cassis, apricot, rose and jasmine, making it the definition of fruity-floral. $55, at Bloomingdales

blog_fragrances_urbanlily.jpgStrange Invisible Perfumes Urban Lily:  Strange Invisible Perfumes is a small artisanal fragrance house based in Venice, CA that uses only natural essential oils—nothing synthetic.  (Interesting fact: its founder is Alexandra Balahoutis, who is Jerry Bruckheimer's stepdaughter.)  Urban Lily is a deeply sexy spin on the usually very ladylike lily of the valley. And although Balahoutis won't reveal her recipe, I'd bet it includes amber and sandalwood. Expensive, but worth it. $175, at siperfumes.com

blog_fragrances_dior.jpgDior Escale a Portofino: There's more to Dior than J'Adore. The latest is Escale a Portofino, which, for those of you out there old enough to remember, smells very much like 4711.  If this doesn't ring bells, think sexy citrus. Oxymoronic, but true. $65, at Nordstrom

Le Labo notebook: Okay, this isn't technically a fragrance. But Le Labo has partnered with La Compagnie Kraft to create a blank book infused with Santal 26, a smoky scent that's one of Le Labo's best (in my opinion). A mild rub of the cover emits the smell of a cozy lived-in fireplace. $50, at lelabofragrances.com
