5 Minutes with Condola Rashad

blog_rashad_stage.jpgThe theater world's newest darling has got to be 23-year-old actress Condola Rashad, who's winning critical raves for her role in Lynn Notage's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, Ruined. The first starring role and major show for the daughter of Cosby Show actress Phylicia Rashad and sportscaster Ahmad Rashad, Ruined is not exactly meet-you-at-Bungalow-after-curtain-call fare:  the play is a grueling (albeit stunningly eloquent) examination of genital mutilation and genocide set in a war-ravaged Congo.  Rashad (above, at left) plays Sophie, a so-called "ruined" woman who acts as both protector and entertainer for a group of young prostitutes seeking refuge at a Congolese bar.

The show has been extended twice, and considering the subject matter, you must be exhausted. How do you manage?
The longer [the play] extends the harder it gets to do. It's just about trying to find ways to keep yourself in a good place during the day so that you're able to go to that dark place at night. You almost have to force yourself to go out and get in the sunshine. I try and spend as much time with my dog as I can.

Lynn Nottage wrote the play based on her interviews with Congolese survivors.  Did you meet any of the women she spoke to?
I didn't get a chance to speak to any of them. But a lot of my research was based on watching documentaries with [Congolese women], so I was able to see them.

Until now you've mostly been a comedic actress. Were your friends and your family surprised when they saw you in this role?
My friends were but my family wasn't, because I did a few serious roles in college. My parents were actually more surprised about the singing.  My mom knew that I could sing but I've never had to sing in any show, so that was definitely a new thing for her.

Is American Idol—or at least a possible record deal—on your mind?
Starting a band is something that I've always kind of wanted to do. I do create songs and play the guitar. But my focus is definitely on acting. I think if there's going to be singing involved in my career it would probably be in musical theater.

blog_rashad_rashads.jpgHow did your mom, who is probably one of the most iconic TV mothers in history, handle you wanting to act?
My mom was very supportive, but very adamant about not having me go into the acting world at an early age—she wanted me to experience other things, which I really appreciate now.

You were pretty young when The Cosby Show was actually on the air. Did you watch it?
I didn't because I was always there when she filmed it! I watched cartoons growing up.

And you didn't grow up in a brownstone in Brooklyn with a brother named Theo?
Nope.  Mount Vernon.

Ruined is at the Manhattan Theater Club through June 28.

21 Club's Yearbook

blog_21_yearbook.jpgIt may no longer require ties, but the New York eatery 21 Club is as nostalgic as ever. The restaurant is planning a Web version of Iron Gate, the yearbook of sorts that was first published in 1936. It contained personal memories of the place from such patrons as Ed Sullivan and tennis great Bill Tilden; it was released again in 1950 with entries from Walt Disney and gossip columnist Louella Parsons. For Iron Gate 2.0, 21 is soliciting submissions from dozens of regulars, among them Whoopi Goldberg, Ricky Gervais, Laura Bush and Peggy Siegal. Jay McInerney and Henry Kissinger have already agreed to contribute, as has Suzy Welch, who will write of her first date there with her now husband, Jack.

Inside Marc Jacobs's party for Lorenzo Martone

blog_lorenzo_marc_10.jpg

Confirming that Marc Jacobs and Lorenzo Martone are the most sought-after couple in town, Jesus Luz and Madonna were among the 150 friends who came to the recent party Marc threw for his fiance's 30th birthday. At the not-yet-opened-to-the-public nightclub Avenue, guests (including Julia Restoin Roitfeld, Genevieve Jones, Larry Gagosian, Rachel Feinstein and John Currin) were treated to cocktails, sparklers and dancing, with music courtesy of Burberry's Alex Malgouyres. Luz even spent some time behind the turntable (we hear he's hoping to DJ as well as model). For the finale, there was a cake in the shape of a bear. Why a bear? It's a term of endearment the scruffily-bearded couple have for each other.

Carla Bruni's Secret Beauty Drink

blog_bruni_drink_01.jpgParis's beautiful people, long known for their ability to smoke and drink into the wee hours without incurring telltale wrinkles or extra pounds, have an unlikely new hot spot: the city's first "detox hotel." At the Gabriel, located in the Marais, guests can experience various treatments, including Carla Bruni-Sarkozy’s new obsession, the Biooster Grog, an orange-and-herb beauty drink said to have a powerful detoxifying effect on the skin. But, fittingly for the City of Light, Hôtel Gabriel isn’t quite as pure as its clinical white decor suggests: It’s also become something of a hipster watering hole. “You can have whiskey at the bar,” says owner Jean-Pierre Marois, “and detox the next day.

Spending Big at MyHouse

blog_nightclub_01.jpgEvery nightclub in America is bemoaning staid spending habits. Yet the owners of MyHouse, the current pinnacle of Hollywood nightlife, are bragging that patrons—who have recently included Rihanna, Mickey Rourke, Kanye West and Prince—have been racking up more $20,000 tabs than ever. Earlier this year, one big spender bankrolled a mini stimulus plan of his own, tipping $17,000 on a $19,000 bill, and since March, the club has been selling out of $4,000 jeroboams of champagne. This success has prompted Armand de Brignac to send over a six-liter bottle of its bubbly that will go for $17,500—the first one available in California.

White Columns turns 40, everybody comes

blog_gallery_goround.jpgDavid Byrne and Cindy Sherman were among the downtown luminaries who attended Saturday night's 40th anniversary benefit auction for White Columns, the alternative exhibition space originally founded as a "socialist art system" by Jeffrey Lew and Gordon Matta-Clark. Guests bid on pieces including a drawing by Elizabeth Peyton, an oil painting by Peter Doig and a signed Richard Prince poster, and by the night's end the non-profit had raised more than $300,000 towards its programs and services for artists.

Ah, to be young and just out of fashion school...

blog_parsons_betsy.jpg“Go for it! Put your blinders on! Love it! Blood, sweat and tears!” This is what we heard Betsey Johnson telling students left and right during the Parsons Fashion Studies Line Debut at Lord & Taylor last week. The annual event, which celebrates the best emerging talent from the program’s graduating class, was buzzing with all the energy and optimism we’ve been hankering for lately.

Niyi Okuboyejo created garments inspired by African masks. Wei-Chen Hsiao told us she spent five full days perfecting her leather jacket. And Davis Rothenberg showed off a bag adorned with Swarovski crystals that light up.

The Thursday Reading List

next-gen-0906-po01.jpgWe love them, we loathe them, we want to marry them. Well, maybe not that Lapo. Bruce Weber shot the “world’s most eligible heirs and heiresses” for Vanity Fair. Now the outtakes are online (Vanity Fair)

Say it with us: Haider Ackermann. Haider Ackermann! At Cannes, Tilda once again pulls it out, fashion wise. (Style.com)

Amber LeBon, daughter of Simon and Yasmin, is evidently the latest model on the rise. Is it just this picture, or is she not the genetic opus we’d imagine? (Fashionista)

More Topshop in NYC? Sources say Sir Philip Green is looking for another high-traffic location. (“Basically, anywhere H&M has a store.”) (Observer)

Everything is better in Switzerland. According to a new survey, Switzerland is the “most attractive location” for the international wealthy, beating out places like London and New York. (Cityfile via WSJ)

Handbag designer and all-around nice human Rebecca Minkoff has had incredible success in just the past couple of years with her line, and now the TV celebs are on the bandwagon. (FabSugar)

Our design staff puts on the dog

blog_designawards_table.jpgPlease bear with us for a quick moment as we bark our own praises. On May 8, W magazine emerged as one of the top dogs at 44th annual awards gala of the Society of Publication Designers.

blog_designawards_graphic.jpgblog_designawards_graphic2.jpgTrue enough, the event, themed "Best in Show," was co-chaired by W's very own art director Nathalie Kirsheh. But we swear (swear!) that Nathalie's position had nothing to do with the fact that W scored top honors for photography and layout, fetching a total of six medals, 20 merits and the members' choice award.

blog_designawards_chairs.jpgIn addition to the dashing hostesses—Kirsheh (above right) and co-chair Judith Puckett-Rinella of T, The New York Times Style Magazine—W's design director Edward Leida trod the stage to present four awards. Triumph the Insult Dog, voiced by comedian Robert Smigel, appeared in a raucously received video. The evening's prime pooch, however, was the show dog Chrome, whose sleek metallic sheen and poised stride across the stage struck us as very, well... W.
