Friday's Reading List

katemoss.jpgTada its zebra! Kate Moss has launched a bag line with Longchamp. She named the bags (out Feb. 11) The Glastonbury, after her favorite music festival, The Soho, and The Glouchester -- prices start at $155 for a small purse, clutches are $490 to $780, handbags are $780 to $1,700, and weekend bags are $1,290 to $2,500. Ads will run with taglines like "Don't You Wish Your Bag Was Hot As Kate's?," "An Absolute Moss-have," "Kate Is Not A Plastic Bag," and "My Moss Bag Brings All The Boys To The Yard." Fashionologie

More British buzz: To celebrate Liberty of London's Carnaby Street store's 50th anniversary, Nicholas Kirkwood has created the perennial printed platform a perfect marriage of peace, love, and serious height! Refinery29

Gisele dispels reports that she went into labor and was taken to a Boston-area hospital. Instead, she says, "I gave birth in the bathtub," at the couple's Beacon Hill penthouse. People.com

In homage to the arctic windchill in NYC today, here's a round up of celeb's wearing silly hats at Sundance. From these pics it's clear that stars are fair-weather friends of fashion. Huffington Post

And lastly, in a seriously disturbing contest to find "the best bottom in the world," American Apparel is asking regular ladies to submit photos of their behinds, which will then be posted on their site for the world to view, rate, and comment on. As one reader commented, "The lowbrow brilliance of this campaign is truly astounding." Indeed. The Cut

Seeking the Unique

blog_lisa_banner.jpgLisa Borgnes Giramonti, whose endlessly chic blog, A Bloomsbury Life, is a longstanding favorite of W editors, is back for a second stint on our Editors' Blog. (See her previous blogs here.) This time around, she's sharing her resolutions for 2010—and the elegant accoutrements she's found to help her achieve them. Check back here every Friday for Lisa's weekly installments.

Part Two: I resolve to seek the unique.

Out with the bland, in with the unusual. I'm not interested in amassing anymore—my post-recession budget and a closet heaving with barely-used "It" bags have put a stop to that. If I'm going to buy something now, it needs to wow me on a visceral level. The following picks pass my 'gut test' because they have either an uber-distinct sensibility or offer a rebellious spin on an old classic.

blog_lisaunique_01.jpg This 1960's medallion necklace from V Vintage is all that's required to turn any outfit into something spectacular. Made of Bakelite enamel with a bamboo-style chain link, it's one of those rare pieces that transcends trends. (And, FYI, it bears more than a passing resemblance to Julia Robert's neckwear at the Golden Globes.) Wear it with anything and let the accolades roll in. vvintage90210.com

blog_lisaunique_02.jpg When I made a long-anticipated pilgrimage to Charleston House (home to the Bloomsbury Group) last year and spotted this deckchair inspired by an old Penguin book cover, I knew I wasn't leaving without one. Purchase a cluster of them and tell your friends that Virginia Woolf, Graham Greene and Raymond Chandler are waiting for them in the back garden. It's—sorry, I have to say it—novel seating. bloomsburystore.com

blog_lisaunique_03.jpgI'm always on the hunt for a beautiful sachet and this satin one featuring a portrait of Mrs. "Liberty of London" fulfills my requirements for style with substance. Supremely silky and filled with aromatic lavender, it imparts an invigorating kick to any closet or drawer. Plus, lavender's calming properties make it a perfect travelling companion: rest it on your eyelids when you're in seat 47J and circling La Guardia airport. liberty.co.uk

blog_lisaunique_04.jpg I'm a Nike Shox girl (I'm addicted to the extra bit of height they give me) but am often left unmoved by the color combinations I see in stores. Problem solved. Their website allows you to completely customize your own shoe, from laces to lining to monogramming. It's a couture freak's dream. Look for me hiking in the Hollywood Hills in my new silvery Stella McCartney-inspired pair. nikeid.nike.com

blog_lisaunique_05.jpg This English game bag was designed for grouse-hunting on a country estate, but I think it's even more stylish as a city hold-all. It has that classic ancestral allure I love—very Brideshead Revisited, no? Made of rubberized cotton and bridle leather trim, it's weather-impermeable and will add some rugged grace to your urban jungle. smithscountrypursuits.co.uk

blog_lisaunique_06.jpg I've been reading a lot of D. H. Lawrence lately so these rustic workers' smocks struck an immediate chord. Made from heavy unbleached linen and dating from the middle to late 1800's, their Jane Birkin-meets-Rupert Birkin sensibility would be perfect with jeans, tousled hair and your favorite leather boots. Plus, it's not very often you get a chance to buy an actual heirloom at high street prices. greenandstone.com

blog_lisaunique_07.jpg Leave it to Dame Vivienne Westwood to transform a symbol of Victorian restraint into an anarchic wallcovering. Her "Cut-out Lace" wallpaper, based on a piece of antique fabric, is both subtle and stunning and would have any wall desperate to be draped with it. It has a prim-punk sensibility, which makes sense—they don't call Viv the Queen Mother of the Sex Pistols for nothing. cole-and-son.com

blog_lisaunique_08.jpg I've been searching for interesting outdoor seating for ages, so when I discovered these cast-stone garden poufs from Harbinger LA, I did a double-take. Seriously, how genius are they? I adore the pleated sides and witty tufted details and can envision scattering them around my pool area to create trompe l'oeil seating that you don't have to cover when it rains. Even better, they come in 25 colors. Calm yourself. harbingerla.lucasstudioinc.com

blog_lisaunique_09.jpg There's no mincing words with this table lamp: its vintage modern glamour has me at hello. The hand-rubbed brass design, meant to evoke a derrick tower, is a triumph of machine age simplicity and reminds me of a time when Hollywood was young and oil was king. Industrial, meet sophistication. circalighting.com

blog_lisaunique_10.jpg Who says dish towels can't whet your appetite as well as dry the dishes? These ones from Julie Haslam do both. Inspired by her grandmother's handwritten recipe book, she created a range of dish towels featuring the actual cooking instructions from her Nan's most-beloved meals. Hot cross buns, anyone? juliehaslam.co.uk

Beauty obsession of the week: Georgia by G & Company's skin cream

When Jodie Patterson and Kiara Ellozy opened Georgia, their cozy Nolita boutique a year and a half ago, their mandate was simple: Sell what they believed were the best hair products. Georgia carries every line from Tresemme to Neil George and there's even a solo salon chair discreetly off to the side in the back.

blog_goldcream.jpgI visited one recent evening and, while I was pleased to see that many of Jodie's and Kiara's favorites are the same as mine, what stopped me in my tracks was one of their private label skin care products. Georgia by G & Company's Gold Luxury Skin Cream has the consistency of whipped butter, so it's great for cold weather (I will pack it for the slopes, if I ever make it there). But being that I am admittedly more of a scent-obsessed than skin-obsessed beauty editor, what really made me swoon was its fragrance. I'm usually not a lemon-scent lover (the category reminds me dishwashing liquid and furniture polish), but this is lemongrass punched up with the greenery of eucalyptus, resulting in a scent so fresh and invigorating, I can't get enough.  $30 for 8 oz, Georgiany.com

The Couture Report: Spring 2010 (Part 2)

blog_2010couture2_01.jpgVALENTINO: On the walls of the show space, the designers projected video animations of twirling trees by American installation artist Jennifer Steinkamp. They smudged “Avatar” blue makeup over models’ limbs and eye sockets. All of this underlined their concept of “virtual Eden” and a wish to create a sense of “magic and fantasy,” as Piccioli put it during a preview. “We don’t think it’s a moment to be safe.” ... click to continue

blog_2010couture2_02.jpg JEAN PAUL GAULTIER: Gaultier has a knack for bending concepts to suit his design signatures, which speaks to the strength of his handwriting. The latest masculine-feminine hybrid was a splendid, gold-buttoned naval pantsuit, the jacket an ingenious marriage of bustier and bolero. Corset details were worked into strong-shouldered jackets, including a tailcoat—a mini trend this high fashion week... click to continue

Fashion illustrator takes her art homme

artist.jpgSpanish artist Paula Sanz Caballero is best known for her embroidered illustrations of the jet-set pack, an imaginary cast of characters -- all skinny, stylish and slightly snooty -- that she creates with little more than fabric, needle and thread. You may have seen her work on the covers of Neiman Marcus catalogues, on greeting cards for Roger la Borde, in British Elle, Spanish Vogue or in the pages of W. This month, Sanz Caballero gives us a glimpse into another (more disturbingly titillating) side of her oeuvre with an exhibit at Barcelona's Arts Santa Monica museum, "The Soft Book of Men."

art1.jpgSanz Caballero's done away with those cafe society figures. Instead, the show's protagonist is a rather dumpy, older fellow sporting a bowler hat and a pot belly. His most defining feature? A giant boner shaped like a pistol. The exhibit features plenty of her signature embroidered "drawings" as well as oil paintings, collages and sculptures. Our favorites include a tiny plastic sculpture of the poor guy wedged under a stiletto heel and the battalion of men standing guard (below) like Emperor Qin's Terracotta Army.  "This is why all men are the same, all gray," says the artist, "all forcing the man ahead with the penis/gun to do what others do, without questioning why or where they go."

art2.jpgSanz Caballero's clay figurines have proved so popular that eight out of the 200 men have already been stolen. On the plus side: "I know now that everybody likes to have a little man at home," she notes, adding that she also hopes to one day make jewelry, shirts and patterned china based on the excited little dude.

previous.jpgAn example of Sanz Caballero's previous work.

Ru Paul: Fashion people are "nasty" and "rot-ten"

rupaulpinkuse.jpgThe second season of the Logo network's RuPaul's Drag Race is nearly upon us. For the uninitiated, the show is a cross-dressing cross between Top Model and Project Runway, complete with its own elimination catchphrase ("Shanté, you stay, and Sashay away"), in which 12 contestants compete for the title of America's Next Drag Superstar. This season, lovely ladies including Jujubee from Boston and Pandora's Boxx from Rochester, NY will lipsynch for their lives while RuPaul lays on the power of positivity as thick as her Viva Glam full-coverage foundation. And as if the show weren't enough, Ru's also got a new book, titled, what else, Workin' It! RuPaul's Guide to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Style (Harper Collins).

New York Fashion Week is coming up. Will you be participating in anything fashion-related?
I don't. I cannot stand the people. I think the fashion people are so nasty and so pretentious. One thing that I am not is pretentious and I cannot stand pretentious people. I love fashion, love color, love texture, love all of that. But all of the people who surround that are rot-ten.

What do you like to wear when you're out of drag — in other words, menswear?
Today I'm wearing jodhpurs with these beautiful Ann Demeulemeester boots that actually almost come up to my knee. And I have long legs. These are hard to find. And a black motorcycle jacket with a YSL little scarf and a beret. I look like a 1920s director.

usecover.jpgIn your book, you reveal all the tricks to create an illusion, such as taping your face. But what do you think about plastic surgery?
I love it. I love it. We are spiritual beings having a human experience. The human experience part of our journey is very short. It's not to be taken that seriously. So if you want to snatch that face and yank it, right on, mama. You rotate the tires on your car, don't you? So why not?

And so, about the show. Last season was a break out hit. Were you surprised?
I think that winds of change are upon us. After the Bush Administration people were tired of living under this sort of cloud of fear — self-imposed, I might add. I'm not blaming anyone. But I think people are ready for color and experimentation.

What can we expect from the upcoming season?
It is outrageous. The kids this season have had the advantage of having seen the first season and getting the lay of the land. They came with premeditated strategies. They're actually kind of ruthless — as ruthless as an LA driver.

realcontest.jpgContestants Pandora's Boxx (left) and Jujubee.

Portions of the show seem to parody Tyra Banks and America's Next Top Model. Were you inspired by her?
I don't think we parody her. But we do have a contestant on our show whose name is Tyra — all the young drags use the names that are popular in pop culture. There's always a Britney or a Whitney. The Tyra on our show is heavily into Beyonce. At one point she gets frustrated and says, "I have not listened to Beyonce in 14 days!"

Joan Crawford, Barbra Streisand and Cher are some of the top classic drag icons. Who are some modern women who are potential drag icons?
Beyonce, Britney, Angelina Jolie. Women who embody both male and female characteristics. Angelina Jolie clearly wears her masculinity very well. Little boys who grow up to be drag queens identify with that duality.

What other projects are you working on?
I'm actually working on another record. But we also got a greenlight for a show on Logo called "DragU," which is RuPaul's Drag University. We're going to take women from the middle of America who have basically given up on themselves and really make them over from the inside out.

The second season of Ru Paul's Drag Race debuts February 1 on Logo.

The Couture Report: Spring 2010

Thumbnail image for blog_2010couture_01.jpgCHANEL: After creating 53 couture collections for Chanel, what could Karl Lagerfeld possibly do that was completely new for the 54th? Well, for starters, silver. "Not one gold button," he said before the show, raising a finger for emphasis. Black-and-white combos? Gone as well. Navy? Nada. Like the pastel fluorescent columns that flooded the show space with an otherworldly glow, Lagerfeld let color and metallic flashes bring energy and modernism to one of the most enduring status symbols in the fashion universe: the Chanel suit... click to continue

blog_2010couture_02.jpg CHRISTIAN DIOR: Galliano opened the show with a strong tailoring statement based on riding jackets and skirts: the former ending in Edwardian peplums, the latter sprouting volume on one side via pleats or swags of fabric caught at the hip. The gesture of sidesaddle riding was evoked with wind-blown lapels and those elegantly off-kilter skirts. Galliano kept elements of tailoring in the halter dresses and tulle jackets in his cocktail segment. Scattered with delicate and frothy embroideries, they were real beauties.... click to continue

blog_2010couture_03.jpg GIVENCHY: On Tuesday night, Tisci was still a showman, with Ciara, Kanye West and Stella Tennant summoned to witness the spectacle. The 22 looks the designer sent whisking through the Imperial Salon of the Westin Hotel had their moments -- sometimes suave, sometimes a circus. Lara Stone was a vision of Seventies-era Parisian chic in a fluffy, peach feathered bolero fastened with a big gazar bow that trailed over her black Bermudas. The lacquered tuxedos and silk tailcoats that opened the show were distinctive and demonstrated Tisci's tailoring forte... click to continue

blog_2010couture_04.jpg GIORGIO ARMANI PRIVÉ: When Armani takes you to the moon, he goes all the way. A guide to David Beckham's Milan

blog_operachic_banner.jpgblog_beckhammilan_01.jpgBeckham è tornato! Yes, as of three weeks ago, David Beckham is back in Milan. As any Becks fan knows, the 34-tear-old soccer star spends part of his year—from January until May—playing for the Berlusconi-owned team A.C. Milan. While Victoria mostly stays back in LA with the kids, the English midfielder, now in his second season on loan from the Los Angeles Galaxy, has settled into a relatively low-key Milan routine. He's managed to win over the locals with a tactful approach to his celebrity, plowing through games diligently and avoiding the infamous Milan nightclub scene that has derailed more than a few soccer careers. So what are David's favorite Milan haunts? Let Opera Chic be your guide.

blog_beckhammilan_02.jpg 1. Hotel Principe di Savoia Milano: Known as "il Principe," the 83-year-old, five-star hotel is where Becks calls home while in Milan. Beckham stays in the Presidential Suite, three-bedroom penthouse apartment and it's the only hotel suite in the country with its own private spa (swimming pool included). Previous guests of the suite include the Queen of England, Mick Jagger, Madonna, Michael Jackson and George Clooney (who once racked-up a cool $35,000 in damages playing bocce on the suite's marble floors, according to one report). As for his behavior in the hotel, no tantrums or suite trashings have been reported to date!  Hotel Principe di Savoia Milano, Piazza della Repubblica 17, 20124.

blog_beckhammilan_03.jpg 2. Acanto restaurant: The Italian restaurant inside Hotel Principe di Savoia is a simple elevator ride downstairs for the star. Beckham's generally the most casually dressed patron there (think PRPS jeans, Abercrombie sweatshirt and white Adidas kicks), but don't assume that the same dress code applies to you! At Acanto, Beckham eats very early, between 7 and 8 pm, and usually alone. (He's known to spend part of the meal speaking with wife Victoria on his cellular.) His tastes are simple; he likes pasta with tomato sauce, grilled meats, salumi (on occasion), and will almost always order a single glass of wine, always red. For breakfast, Beckham is said to be partial to freshly squeezed juice, toast, tea with milk, fruit and a copy of The Guardian. (He seems blissfully uninterested in what the famously aggressive Italian sports press has to say; he does not read Italian well enough, and that's probably a blessing). Hotel Principe di Savoia Milano, Piazza della Repubblica 17, 20124.

blog_beckhammilan_04.jpg 3. Giardino d'Inverno bar:  Beckham—occasionally with Victoria—has been spotted nibbling on the delicate aperitivo offerings at the hotel's bar, known for its stained-glass ceiling and 3,000-piece Murano chandeliers. Principe's veteran barman, Enzo Mirto, is also a favorite with Madonna, Robert De Niro, and Quentin Tarantino. NB: If you spot Beckham here, put the camera away: as at the Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood, at Principe there's a no-photograph policy. Hotel Principe di Savoia Milano, Piazza della Repubblica 17, 20124.

4. Club 10 Fitness Center: Milan's most exclusive and private health club, Club 10 is located on the top floor of the hotel (convenient to Beckham's penthouse suite). The boutique gym is also where Teatro alla Scala's primo ballerino, Roberto Bolle, works out, although most members are fellow soccer players and high rollers who catch rays (in the nicer weather) at the solarium and heated swimming pool. Hotel Principe di Savoia Milano, Piazza della Repubblica 17, 20124.

5. Ristorante Ibiza: Beckham sometimes eats at Ibiza, a favorite of AC Milan's former captain and Beckham pal Paolo Maldini, in Milan's trendy Brera neighborhood. There, Beckham likes the restaurant's signature pasta dish, penne alla sancho con la pancetta, (penne in a creamy pancetta sauce) and gamberi col radicchio (grilled jumbo shrimp with radicchio salad.) Ristorante Ibiza, Corso Garibaldi 108, 20121.

blog_beckhammilan_05.jpg 6. Dal Bolognese Ristorante: As personal guest of Italian designer Roberto Cavalli, Beckham has been spotted dining at Bolognese, a Cavalli favorite, steps from Principe's entrance. Dal Bolognese Ristorante, Piazza della Repubblica 13, 20124.

7. Trattoria Da Giannino: Beckham likes Giannino's delicious menu against the mix of old and new interiors as much as we do. Trattoria Da Giannino, Via Vittor Pisani 6, 20124.

blog_beckhammilan_06.jpg 8. Spazio Armani: Although Becks is no longer the face (and hot body) of Armani's underwear line—another soccer player, Cristiano Ronaldo from Portugal just replaced him—he's known to haunt the sleek labyrinth of Armani's three-floor, downtown mega-mall, after hours, of course. Spazio Armani, Via manzoni 31.

blog_beckhammilan_07.jpg 9. Nobu: Beckham's weakness for sushi is indulged at Milan's Nobu, located within Armani's mega mall on Via manzoni (above). Beckham frequently dines there with Armani's own family and staff, whom he's known for years. [He also joins Armani sometimes at his nearby Via Borgonuovo residence for supper.] Armani/Nobu, Via Pisoni 1, 20121.

blog_beckhammilan_08.jpg 10. Domenico Dolce & Stefano Gabbana's house: When Victoria's in town, the couple often heads over to Domenico & Stefano's private residence on Via Mozart (Milan's most privé street) for an intimate dinner party. Posh reportedly has an aversion to eating with people she doesn't know, but she's very much at home with the designers, both longtime friends. Via Mozart, 20122.

11. Dolce & Gabbana boutique: As the official off-the-field dresser of A.C. Milan, you can't separate the label from Beckham and his teammates. Even if you can't fit D&G in your budget, the store windows are always worth a drive by. Dolce & Gabbana, Via della spiga 2.

12. Gold restaurant: Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana's supercool "concept restaurant" created by the two designers, is a favorite of Victoria's; David's, not so much (it's a very swanky restaurant where you can easily spend 120-150 euros per person). But Posh likes Gold, and she's also brought the boys along on occasion. Gold, 2 via Carlo Poerio, 20129.

13. Stadio Meazza - San Siro di Milano: and Milanello sports center: You can always head to San Siro and, you know, actually buy a ticket to watch A.C. Milan play. Best case scenario: Beckham scores a goal and peels-off his shirt for a victory lap!  Stadio Meazza - San Siro di Milano, Via Piccolomini 5, 20151.

This Week's Model: Eniko Mihalik

blog_skinny_banner.jpgblog_enika_headshot.jpg The Hungarian model Eniko Mihalik (seen here in W's April 2009 issue) is known for her amazing cheekbones, large doe eyes and all-around sex appeal (she's among the topless beauties in the new Pirelli calendar shot by Terry Richardson). But the 21-year-old who was discovered six years ago in a mall by a casting agent in her hometown of Bekescsaba—and has since become a regular in the pages of W, French Vogue and V—hasn't given up her more innocent amusements. As we learned, she's got a beloved teddy bear and a thing for Nickelodeon.

Your first show ever was Chanel couture—what was that like?
It was the most exciting moment of my career. I watched fashion TV so I remember seeing all these big models and thinking, like, "I can't believe Natasha Poly is standing behind me in line!"

Thumbnail image for Eniko_runway_sp10_rodarte.jpgFrom left: Rodarte spring 2010; Chanel spring 2010

What was it like first meeting Karl Lagerfeld?
I was scared of him! I think a lot of people are scared of him, actually.

Now you work with him regularly, how has your relationship changed?
I don't think I've ever really spoken to him—I'm still scared of him! I'm so shy. But every time I get confirmed there, it's still a big thing. If they ever said to me, "Eniko, we want you to do our show, but you can't do any other shows," I would be like, "Ok!"

eniko_runway_sp10_balmain_.jpgFrom left: Balmain spring 2010; Bottega Veneta spring 2010

We've heard your most prized possession is a teddy bear—
Yeah, Bubu! I got it from one of my ex-boyfriends and I started taking him with me everywhere. If I sleep without him I just wake up in the middle of the night and my hand is searching for him. He's really dirty now, but I just love my little guy.

We've also heard you love cartoons; which do you watch the most?
I just moved to a new place, so I don't have my cable hooked up, so all I watch is Nickelodeon and Disney Channel. I like South Park and Family Guy, but Spongebob is absolutely my favorite. I'm also a big fan of Hannah Montana.

eniko_harvest_stardust_editorial_w.jpgMihalik in "Harvest" shot by Mario Sorrenti for W's April 2009 issue; in "Stardust" shot by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin for W's April 2009 issue

Do you like Miley Cyrus?
Not Miley, just Hannah Montana.

You're known for working in more avant-garde publications; is there any magazine that you are dying to be shot for?
American Vogue would be amazing. I know I'm not that type of commercial girl and unfortunately, I don't have the million-dollar smile, but I think Anna Wintour should try me out.

Enika_max_mara_hm_ads.jpgFrom left: Max Mara's fall 2009 campaign; H&M's fall 2009 campaign.

Tell us about the steamy Terry Richardson Pirelli calendar that recently came out.
It sounds a bit bad, but we kind of were running around naked the whole time. We were all pretty much free to do whatever we want, and Terry took pictures.

Enika_2010-Pirelli-Calendar_W.jpgFrom left: Mihalik in "American Dreamin'" shot by Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin for W's December 2008 issue; Minhalik in the 2010 Pirelli Calendar shot by Terry Richardson.

Is it true that you're interested in starting your own restaurant back home?
Yes! I love food, and I figure there is no American type of a restaurant like a pastry shop or a bakery where you can buy a bagel or get a salad in Hungary. I think it would be great because come on, everyone loves to grab a bagel here, so why wouldn't they love it over there?

What are your favorite foods?
Hungarian food is my favorite. I love Italian food and sushi, but I still think goulash is tastiest thing.
