Geneva watch fair dispatch: Thin is in

blog_watches_geneva.jpgAfter five years of watching the ever-so-frightening trend of time pieces becoming larger and larger, we're seeing a return to a more subtle, elegant and, yes, thin style for both ladies' and gentlemen's wrists. At Le Salon International De La Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) in Geneva, it's all about the millimeters: less is more.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Piaget's Calibre 12P (which made its mark as the world's thinnest mechanical self-winding movement in 1960) Piaget has debuted the Calibre 1200P,  marking a new record for the thinnest self-winding movement at an astonishing 2.35 mm. The new Calibre is encased in one of the brand's most recognizable styles -- the Alteplano -- and comes in two limited editions in both rose and white gold. The case width? A mere 5.25 mm.

blog_watches_constantin.jpgThe craftsmen at Vacheron Constantin also went back to their archives for inspiration for their newest version of their classic Patrimony watch. The Historique Ultra-Fine 1955 and 1968 watches are slicker and slimmer than the previous Patrimony and the case is just 5.5 mm thick.

Finally, Ralph Lauren's Slim Classique (which was introduced last year as the company launched their first time pieces in collaboration with Richemont group) took an especially feminine turn this week. The already slender silhouette (encasing a mechanical movement of 2.1 mm) is now available in a smaller 38mm diameter version or with a bezel encrusted with pave diamonds.
