This Week's Model: Joan Smalls

blog_skinny_banner.jpgCavalli_Backstage.jpgJoan Smalls (seen here backstage at Roberto Cavalli) has been modeling since 2007, but you could say that it's only now that she's really getting noticed. The 21-year-old previously appeared in the Nordstrom catalogue and walked for smaller designers like Benajmin Cho and Heatherette. But this past January she landed her big break with an exclusive at Givenchy couture. "It was my rebirth," says the Puerto Rico native. "I will always be appreciative to Ricardo Tisci for believing in me." After seeing her all over the fall runways, we were more than ready to get to get to know Smalls a little better.

When did you realize you wanted to be a model?
I became obsessed watching fashion TV shows when I was a teenager and recognized that I had the height and body frame. I especially became hooked when I saw on E! True Hollywood Story how much a model can make and how I can achieve a better living for my family and me.

What was your first big splurge when you made it in the modeling world?
I got my dad a pickup truck.

What are your favorite hangouts back home?
A town called Pinones that has secluded beaches that I would frequent with my boyfriend. It felt like paradise.

Tell us a favorite childhood memory.
When I was about four years old I would sneak my two dogs Milo and Otis into my room and have them lay on each side of me while I watched Sesame Street.

What are three things that you always carry in your suitcase?
My bikini, a pair of black high heels and a pair of comfortable jeans.

PradaGivenchyFall10.jpg Prada fall 2010, left. Givenchy spring 2010

What's been your biggest fashion mistake?
I hope I haven't had one!

What do you have a weakness for?
Kittens and shoes.

Give us three words to describe yourself.
Caring, funny and astute.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
To not be so affected by negative situations.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Hopefully successful, and with a family.

This Week's Model: Tatiana Cotliar

blog_skinny_banner.jpgblog_headshot.jpgDuring New York fashion week, there's one show that every model wants to walk in: Marc Jacobs. So, when an unfamiliar brunette opened Jacobs' presentation at the Armory last month, plenty of people took notice. Some even thought she might have been one of the girls Jacobs pulled off the street to walk in the show. As it turns out, the model was relative newcomer Tati Cotliar, a 19-year-old from Buenos Aires who's only been modeling for about a year. (Last season she did spring 2010 Rodarte and Vivienne Westwood.) Cotliar followed her Jacobs coup with turns at Proenza Schouler and Tommy Hilfiger and had just landed in Milan when we caught up with her.

marc_jacobs_opener.jpgMarc Jacobs fall 2010

Tell us what it was like opening for Marc Jacobs.
Five seconds before making my first step, I was shaking and my heart was about to exit my body. But the moment the music started, I felt in character—the energy of the clothes, the music and the people. When I returned to backstage, the whole team was watching the show on a screen, and I saw how all the little details were connected and I understood everything Marc had done.

tatiana_cotliar.jpgFrom left: Proenza Schouler fall 2010; Tommy Hilfiger fall 2010

What was it like working with Marc?
It reminded me of when I was a kid and amazed by my mother's closet, but it was also like being in art class. Everything he did, moved or touched, was logically justified every look, every shoe. Even at was 2 AM, and he was still functioning like new and couldn't stop bringing ideas.

You guys were there at 2am preparing for the show?
Yeah, I was quite excited, I didn't feel tired. I wanted to propose a pajama party! Ha ha, probably not a good idea.

How would you describe him?
He is Marc Jacobs, you know? He is a big deal, but a very cool guy. He's relaxed and easy going.

tatiana_cotliar_5.jpgFrom left: Betsey Johnson fall 2010; Jason Wu fall 2010

How did you become interested in modeling?
Actually, when an agent first approached me, I wasn't interested AT ALL. I only knew about modeling in Argentina and I didn't like how commercial it was. After a while, though, I started to see fashion as an art. I love visual arts and photography.

How would you describe your personal style?
I like to make a character of myself. I avoid routine, so depending on my feelings that day, I could be boyish, feminine, sexy, innocent or quirky.

You studied cinema in school, what do you like about movies?
I'm a movie freak. I love everything scripts, art direction and music, music, music!

tatiana_cotliar_2.jpgCotliar, at far right, in Vivienne Westwood's spring 2010 ad campaign

What is something people in the fashion industry would not know about you?
That I'm really authentic.

What was your first big purchase after you became a model?
More and more cheap vintage clothes!

This Week's Model (male edition): Baptiste Giabiconi

blog_skinny_banner.jpgblog_malemodel_01.jpgThree years ago, when Baptiste Giabiconi was working at a helicopter plant in southern France, his big dream was to save enough money to buy his own pizza truck. The son of a Corsican mechanic, Giabiconi (seen here in a portrait shot by Ola Rindal) had never been to Paris and had certainly never considered a career in modeling. But then someone noticed him at his local gym and referred him to a photographer, who introduced him to a Paris agent, who got him booked on a couple of small magazine jobs. Then someone else noticed him in one of those magazines and called him in for a test shoot.

That last someone happened to be Karl Lagerfeld, which goes a long way toward explaining why Giabiconi, 20, is arguably the world's No. 1 male model, and why the former metalworker shows up for an interview in Paris wearing Dior jeans, a Comme des Garçons shirt, a Tom Ford shearling coat and a Chanel scarf. In the year and a half since his first shoot with Lagerfeld, the two have worked on dozens of projects together, from short films for Chanel runway shows to a nude cover of Wallpaper. Editorials and campaigns shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott and other top photographers have further crammed Giabiconi's schedule.

wallpaper_just_cavalli_ss10.jpgFrom left: Giabiconi shot by Karl Lagerfeld on the cover of Wallpaper's October 2009 issue; Just Cavalli's spring 2010 ad campaign shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott

"There is no other model in the business like him," says Lagerfeld, who calls Giabiconi an "inspiring" collaborator due to a rare ability to "act and transform himself." Physically speaking, Lagerfeld adds, he's a male version of Gisele Bündchen: "Perfect when dressed and stunning undressed."

Giabiconi says his new life feels like a waking dream. He now lives near Lagerfeld in Paris and is the most visible member of the designer's entourage, though he retains his twangy Marseille accent and insists he's not much for parties, preferring to stay home and watch Alain Delon films. Still, Giabiconi, who clearly loves performing, doesn't hide his ambitions for a big career beyond modeling. He has thrown himself into acting and singing lessons, and he talks of "conquering Hollywood" someday: "I have a lot of plans. I know what I want in life, and I go for it." And what about that pizza truck? "I still like that idea," he says. "But now, why not have a whole chain of them?"

This Week's Model: Jenny Sinkaberg

blog_skinny_banner.jpghead.jpgWith an intense look complemented by pale blue eyes, newcomer Jenny Sinkaberg is one of the girls expected to shine when the shows officially kick off tomorrow. Though she’s making her New York debut this week, it certainly isn’t her first trip down the catwalk. After signing with IMG last September, the 17-year-old Oslo native (seen here backstage at Chanel) debuted during the spring 2010 collections in Paris at Balenciaga, Miu Miu and Giambattista Valli. But it was at the spring 2010 couture shows that Sinkaberg really wowed. There she managed to land gigs with three of fashion’s most storied houses: Christian Dior, Valentino and Chanel. With that kind of resume, we’re excited to see what Sinkaberg has in store.

There’s a lot of buzz about you for fall. What does that feel like?
Amazing, and at the same time a little scary. It's a huge responsibility, because it means that a lot of people believe I have something to offer this industry.

valentino.jpg

From left: Backstage at Valentino Couture spring 2010; Valentino Couture spring 2010

What shows are you most excited to do?
This will be my first full season. I hope I keep the shows I already did in Paris and have many more additions. I have a "secret list" of what I want to do, but I don't want to publish it. We’ll soon see what's happening!

chaneldior.jpg

From left: Chanel Couture spring 2010; Dior Couture spring 2010

How did you become interested in modeling?
Growing up, I wasn’t into modeling at all. I was a tomboy at heart and beauty, fashion and makeup was far from my daily life. Finally a photographer friend gave me ultimatum: He said if I didn’t contact an agency, he would. That was it.

What do you consider your first big break?
I have to thank Nicolas Ghesquiere at Balenciaga. Walking in his show at the beginning of Paris fashion week definitely put me on the map.

balenmiu.jpg

From left: Balenciaga spring 2010; Miu Miu spring 2010

How was couture?
I had no expectations and I said to myself that I would be happy booking just one show. Doing Valentino, Dior and Chanel was surreal.

Many models say their favorite moment is walking in a Chanel show. How was it for you?
Karl Lagerfeld is such an inspiring man. The influence he has on the fashion industry is not possible to explain with words. Walking for Chanel was always one of my dreams.

What do you like to do when you’re off-duty?
I'm not a fan of a lazy lifestyle, so I prefer to move and not rest. I love running, walking around in new cities, watching people and learning languages. I’ve also been showing and breeding Dalmatians since I was very young.

This Week's Model: Lindsey Wixson

blog_skinny_banner.jpgblog_lindsey_headshot.jpgWho says childhood dreams don't come true? At the tender age of 12, Lindsey Wixson (seen here backstage at Miu Miu spring 2010) got in her head that she wanted to be a model. The Wichita native with the luscious lips went to as many castings as she possibly could (she was, after all, living in Wichita) before being hand-selected by Steven Meisel for an Italian Vogue shoot from a video she posted on Models.com. The buzz spread and in turn, Wixson landed highly coveted exclusives at Prada and Miu Miu for the Spring 2010 shows. Now, at the ripe old age of 15, the high school sophomore is currently the face of Miu Miu. Despite her newfound fame, Wixson still has an "aw shucks" modesty, which we love.

What did your parents say when you told them you wanted to model?
My mom was like, "are you sure you want to do this?" She didn't know what was going on. Luckily, I had an older sister and so my parents were like, "Teenagers go through phases and it's going to be okay." They really have stood behind me the entire way.

lindsey_prada_miu_miu_sp10.jpgFrom left: Prada spring 2010; Miu Miu spring 2010

So after doing a few smaller shows in New York; how did you open Prada?
Well, I don't really know! I think it had a lot to do with the Italian Vogue buzz. I was very, very, very lucky.

lindsey_steffe_reyes_runway_sp10.jpgFrom left: Brian Reyes spring 2010; Cynthia Steffe spring 2010

What was it like meeting Miuccia?
It was great—and intimidating. You see her accomplishments and see why where she's gotten to be where she is. She knows what she wants. I aspire to be like her.

How does it feel to be the face of Miu Miu?
I was so excited. I mean, knowing that they don't normally have a one-girl campaign, I was just shocked. It was really nice because rather than being just one actress or one celebrity, it was just me! I really love the brand. I remember clearly seeing the Kirsten Dunst 2008 campaign in all the fashion magazines and how it was all about Miu Miu.

lindsey_wixson_miu_miu_sp10_ad.jpgMiu Miu's spring 2010 ad campaign

We heard that on the set of the W "Run of Show" story you asked for a bra when wearing a see through top. A lot of other models wouldn't have done that.
I'm 15 and even though I freaked a little, I know for a fact that my mom would freak ten times as much. I just couldn't be flashing everyone out there.

How have the boys at school responded to your career?
I think they're more interested. Before a lot of guys were intimidated, but now they're just like, "Hey, how you doing?"

lindsey_wixson_id_editorial.jpgWixson in "Break the spell" shot by Daniel Jackson for i-D Magazine's December 2009 issue

Are you dating anyone right now?
I'm not. I think it be really horrible since I'm always traveling. I would just have to up and leave for a month and then come back and be like, "Hey! I had to kiss a boy in a shoot! I'm sorry! Haha!"

This Week's Model: Eniko Mihalik

blog_skinny_banner.jpgblog_enika_headshot.jpg The Hungarian model Eniko Mihalik (seen here in W's April 2009 issue) is known for her amazing cheekbones, large doe eyes and all-around sex appeal (she's among the topless beauties in the new Pirelli calendar shot by Terry Richardson). But the 21-year-old who was discovered six years ago in a mall by a casting agent in her hometown of Bekescsaba—and has since become a regular in the pages of W, French Vogue and V—hasn't given up her more innocent amusements. As we learned, she's got a beloved teddy bear and a thing for Nickelodeon.

Your first show ever was Chanel couture—what was that like?
It was the most exciting moment of my career. I watched fashion TV so I remember seeing all these big models and thinking, like, "I can't believe Natasha Poly is standing behind me in line!"

Thumbnail image for Eniko_runway_sp10_rodarte.jpgFrom left: Rodarte spring 2010; Chanel spring 2010

What was it like first meeting Karl Lagerfeld?
I was scared of him! I think a lot of people are scared of him, actually.

Now you work with him regularly, how has your relationship changed?
I don't think I've ever really spoken to him—I'm still scared of him! I'm so shy. But every time I get confirmed there, it's still a big thing. If they ever said to me, "Eniko, we want you to do our show, but you can't do any other shows," I would be like, "Ok!"

eniko_runway_sp10_balmain_.jpgFrom left: Balmain spring 2010; Bottega Veneta spring 2010

We've heard your most prized possession is a teddy bear—
Yeah, Bubu! I got it from one of my ex-boyfriends and I started taking him with me everywhere. If I sleep without him I just wake up in the middle of the night and my hand is searching for him. He's really dirty now, but I just love my little guy.

We've also heard you love cartoons; which do you watch the most?
I just moved to a new place, so I don't have my cable hooked up, so all I watch is Nickelodeon and Disney Channel. I like South Park and Family Guy, but Spongebob is absolutely my favorite. I'm also a big fan of Hannah Montana.

eniko_harvest_stardust_editorial_w.jpgMihalik in "Harvest" shot by Mario Sorrenti for W's April 2009 issue; in "Stardust" shot by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin for W's April 2009 issue

Do you like Miley Cyrus?
Not Miley, just Hannah Montana.

You're known for working in more avant-garde publications; is there any magazine that you are dying to be shot for?
American Vogue would be amazing. I know I'm not that type of commercial girl and unfortunately, I don't have the million-dollar smile, but I think Anna Wintour should try me out.

Enika_max_mara_hm_ads.jpgFrom left: Max Mara's fall 2009 campaign; H&M's fall 2009 campaign.

Tell us about the steamy Terry Richardson Pirelli calendar that recently came out.
It sounds a bit bad, but we kind of were running around naked the whole time. We were all pretty much free to do whatever we want, and Terry took pictures.

Enika_2010-Pirelli-Calendar_W.jpgFrom left: Mihalik in "American Dreamin'" shot by Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin for W's December 2008 issue; Minhalik in the 2010 Pirelli Calendar shot by Terry Richardson.

Is it true that you're interested in starting your own restaurant back home?
Yes! I love food, and I figure there is no American type of a restaurant like a pastry shop or a bakery where you can buy a bagel or get a salad in Hungary. I think it would be great because come on, everyone loves to grab a bagel here, so why wouldn't they love it over there?

What are your favorite foods?
Hungarian food is my favorite. I love Italian food and sushi, but I still think goulash is tastiest thing.

This Week's Model: Hana Soukupová

blog_skinny_banner.jpgblog_hana_headshot.jpgTen years ago, when Czech model Hana Soukupová was just 14 years old, the blonde bombshell entered a Prague modeling contest so she could win $100 to buy Christmas gifts for her family. With her classically beautiful face and Barbie-doll legs, it's no surprise Soukupová walked away with the top prize. Since then, the now 24-year-old has walked in hundreds of runway shows including Versace, Zac Posen and the 2006 and 2007 Victoria's Secret fashion show, and most recently starred in the fall 2009 Anne Klein and spring 2009 St. John ad campaigns. We caught up with Soukupová not long after the holidays.

This Week's Model: Lily Cole

blog_skinny_banner.jpg blog_lilyCole_profile.jpgEnglish model Lily Cole got her big break when she debuted in a 2003 Steven Meisel shoot for Italian Vogue and it was only a year later that she was named Model of the Year at the 2004 British Fashion Awards. At the height of her career, the wide-eyed, redheaded Cole—a favorite of designers such as John Paul Gaultier and Christian Lacroix—appeared on a number of international Vogue covers and starred in ad campaigns for Prada and Moschino. And then, like many so models, she caught the acting bug. Marilyn Manson cast her in the role of Alice in Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll (the film has yet to be released). Now Cole, 21, has a starring role in Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, which hits theaters Christmas Day. Acting alongside the late Heath Ledger and Christopher Plummer, Cole debuts serious chops as Valentina, a rebellious teen desperate to get away from her father's surreal world.

blog_lilyCole_soniaRykiel.jpg Cole modeling at the Paris launch party of Sonia Rykiel's lingerie collection for H&M

How did you first get interested in acting?
It just happened naturally. I always loved acting as a child and was asked to do the film with Marilyn Manson. It reignited my interest in acting and reminded me how much I used to love it when I was a kid. I think it really was The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus though, with [director] Terry [Gilliam], that solidified my interest.

How were you approached for the role of Valentina?
I was asked to do a film with Sally Potter, called Rage, through my modeling agency, and the same casting director was casting Terry’s film a few weeks later. She kindly recommended me to Terry, and I was sent the script and loved it. I auditioned with him on tape and got the part.

blog_lilyCole_parnassus6.jpg Cole with Colin Farrell in "The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus"

Tell us about your character.
Valentina’s feisty, and making the transition from child to woman. She’s excited by the possibilities, but also naïve to what that entails.

blog_lilyCole_parnassus3.jpg Cole with Heath Ledger in "The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus"

Were you nervous to be work with such accomplished actors as Heath Ledger, Christopher Plummer and Johnny Depp?
When I started I was completely intimidated. I remember we did a read-through and I just sitting in the room with Christopher, Heath and Terry and being just like, “Whoa! What am I up against?” But they were all were so lovely and Heath and Christopher were so generous.

What was it like working with Heath?
He was brilliant at what he did, and such a kind and talented spirit.

blog_lilyCole_ads.jpg From left: Cole on the cover of Elle Canada's January 2010 issue; Cole in Rimmel London's fall 2009 campaign

You’re still very young. Think you’ll ever go back to modeling exclusively?
I don’t think I have to be so absolute. Actors do model, whether it’s to promote a movie or advertising; there’s crossover there. I don’t want to completely sever ties with the fashion industry. I love some of the people I’ve met and I respect them and I’m still interested in fashion itself. If I’m lucky, I’ll continue making films, but still kind of keep my finger in that world.

What’s next for you?
I start school up again. I’m in my second year at university, so that takes up most of my time. Who knows for next year? I’m supposed to do a film with [director] Mary Harron and I’m open to other possibilities, but nothing’s confirmed yet.

This Week's Model: Lyndsey Scott

blog_skinny_banner.jpg

blog_lyndsey_profile.jpg Lyndsey Scott likes to take matters into her own hands. Case in point: rather than waiting to be discovered, the 19-year-old from West Orange, New Jersey, posted her own picture on Models.com before she even had an agent. It was only a matter of time before Click Models came calling and soon after she became the first African-American model to land a Calvin Klein exclusive. During the spring 2010 season, Scott walked in over 35 shows including Prada and Gucci, and most recently she was playful in Pink at the Victoria's Secret 2009 fashion show. Scott can be seen in our Craig McDean January issue portfolio, "Run of Show" (above left).

blog_lyndsey_Runway_CKprada.jpg From left: Calvin Klein fall 2009, Prada spring 2010

What made you post your picture on Models.com?
At first I was interested in acting, but people kept suggesting that I try modeling. So posted my picture, but then kind of forgot about it. It was there for maybe 6 months when Click contacted me.

What were your thoughts on modeling before you became a model?
I mean, I would look at magazines and see these beautiful models and of course, like every little girl I fantasized about it, but I never really seriously thought about doing it.

blog_lyndsey_DKNYfw09.jpg DKNY's fall 2009 campaign

What was it like to land the Calvin Klein fall 2009 exclusive?
When I found out, I didn't sleep for 2 days! It was unbelievable. I had to pinch myself every day for months after that because it was so unreal.

Tell us about the Victoria's Secret fashion show. It's not the typical runway show.
It's fun to be able to smile and interact with the audience. At other shows you don't want to distract from the clothing, but with the Victoria's Secret show, it's ok to be a tiny bit more over the top. I mean, you're wearing a train full of balloons.

blog_lyndsey_Wjanuary.jpg Scott (center) in "Run of Show" in our January issue

Was it hard to channel "very sexy"?
I'm pretty curvy for a skinny girl and I've been told that I have a lingerie body, so it wasn't too difficult.

What was your favorite picture of yourself in the Craig McDean spread?
Oh, definitely the YSL.

blog_Lyndsey_babyphatFW09.jpg Baby Phat's fall 2009 campaign

What do like to do in your spare time?
I read and watch movies from Netflix. I'm just finishing up Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace.

What is something that people wouldn't know about you?
I've done martial arts since I was nine and have a black belt in tae kwon do.

blog_lyndsey_Runway_LVGucci.jpg From left: Louis Vuitton spring 2010, Gucci spring 2010

Most of the New York-based models seem to live in downtown Manhattan or Williamsburg. But you live on Roosevelt Island, right?
Well, my apartment's bigger for less money, and it's a nice little community. I do community service and teach theatre classes to local kids when I'm not traveling.

Tell us about your dating life.
Ha ha, I haven't really been doing much dating because I travel so much, but I'm ok being single. I do get approached a lot in New York, but not in London. They're not as aggressive there as they are here. I kind of appreciate that.

This Week's Model: Meghan Collison

blog_skinny_banner.jpg

blog_meghan_profile2.jpgMeghan Collison, 21 (seen here backstage at Givenchy), isn't a classic beauty. But the dark-haired, strong-featured native of Edmonton, Canada has become a fashion world favorite just for that reason. Collison got her start three years ago when she won a contest held by Mode Models (a Canadian modeling agency). Since then, she's become one of the most requested girls in the industry, walking the runway for Givenchy, Jason Wu and Alexander McQueen, among others. When she's not in front of a camera, Collison -- who now lives in Brooklyn -- says she spends her time exploring New York City, crocheting and playing with her cat Pixie.

blog_meghan_levis1.jpg Levi's fall 2009 campaign

You have a very different look compared to other girls in the industry, how has that affected your career?
I realize I'm not a typical pretty face, but I have grown to appreciate that. I don't think I would have achieved what I have if it wasn't for being somewhat different. You have to find a way to stand out or else you'll get lost.

blog_meghan_ads1.jpg From left: H&M's fall 2008 campaign; Topshop's fall 2009 campaign

What has been your career highlight so far?
My Italian Vogue covers taken by Steven Meisel and a jigsaw puzzle was made from an image of me. That by far was one of the coolest things that has ever happened to me!

blog_meghan_adsMag1.jpg From left: Swarovski's fall 2009 campaign; Collison on the cover of Vogue Italia's October 2007 issue

Who was your favorite model growing up?
I liked Querelle Jansen because she was different and beautiful at the same time.

What are some of your hobbies?
I can crochet, which I enjoy doing from time to time, but I almost always never finish what I start making.

blog_meghan_runways.jpg From left: Givenchy spring 2010; Jason Wu resort 2010
