This Week's Model: Melodie Monrose

blog_monrose_v.jpg 18-year-old Melodie Monrose's modeling career has been a whirlwind so far. After being discovered through a friend's model scout in Martinique, the native French speaker was on a plane to New York days later, where she was signed to Wilhelmina on the spot. Fast forward two months, and she took her first show season by storm, walking Marc Jacobs and Jason Wu in New York, Prada in Milan, Yves Saint Laurent and Lanvin in Paris, and landing herself a spot on a number of top ten newcomer lists. So what's going on with Melodie in the post season? W caught up with her at her agency in New York.

You walked 49 shows in your first season—which was your favorite?
It's hard—for each city I have different reasons to like all the shows. If you want to talk about fashion, Gucci was my favorite. For the music, I liked Blumarine. It was great to be in Paris, where everyone was speaking French. Lanvin was amazing; Yves Saint Laurent, too. I was surprised to be a part of Yves Saint Laurent, and I was honored because of the history of the designer—he's always about black models. This season, to be in the show, it was a great moment.

Speaking of Lanvin, we heard the shoes were particularly treacherous this season. Many girls ended up not wearing them because they couldn't walk.
It was very hard to walk in the Lanvin shoes, they were very high, and the runway was very long. But I did it. And I'm not worried about the shoes anymore.

Who were you most excited to meet during your first season?
Marc Jacobs! Though I would love to meet John Galliano—he's my favorite designer. His shows are not just a fashion show, and his clothes are so feminine, so classic, but it's always very colorful.

blog_monrose_2.jpg From left: Marni, spring 2011; Gucci, spring 2011

blog_monrose_h.jpgMissoni, Spring 2011

We heard your schedule has been busy recently, lots of travel.
Yes! I've been mostly shooting in New York—for Interview, V Magazine, V Men—and filling up my book. No campaigns so far...

And you just moved to Paris?
Outside of Paris, actually, right after the fashion season, so a few weeks ago.

Why Paris over New York?
It's easier for me—to move from Martinique, and to live by myself. Everything is French, so I understand almost everything. And I am continuing my studies in Paris—I'm studying communications at Paris 8 University.

What's your favorite place in Paris?
My favorite neighborhood is Le Marais—I hope to live there one day. It's always light, people outside, nice shopping...

Speaking of, what's your most recent shopping purchase?
I just bought an AllSaints dress. It's a grey dress to the knees. And I just bought sneakers to go to the gym. In London, I bought a pair of ballerinas in black silk from Selfridges Shoe Galleries. I'm buying shoes almost every week! But I like shopping at H&M, Zara, AllSaints, and Rag & Bone.

Your dream modeling job?
Modeling for Givenchy.

Your guilty pleasures?
I just discovered American food, so I'm a big fan of cinnamon rolls. And chocolate cake—I can't say no.

How do you like to spend your spare time?
Hanging out with friends, seeing movies, going shopping, going to restaurants. I would love to see the most recent Woody Allen movie, You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger. And for restaurants, I really like TAO in New York—for dessert, they have these fortune cookies with cream inside that I love.

blog_monrose_3.jpgBackstage, Prada, spring 2011

blog_monrose_4.jpgFrom left: Prada, spring 2011; Gucci, spring 2011

We heard that Coco Rocha was helping you with posing.
She used to be my teacher on how to move during a shoot, what is best to do and not to do. My agency set it up—my booker used to be her booker—and she's a very good teacher.

Any fun holiday plans?
I need some sun and some beach. I really want to go home to Martinique and my family.

What would you most like to receive for the holidays?
A Givenchy shoot, but I don't know if that can be given. I can just continue to dream...

What do you see for yourself in the year ahead?
I'm just living day by day, seeing what happens.

And what about tonight?
I plan to go home, finish my book—Mercure by Amelie Nothomb—and sleep, like an old lady. For now, I'm staying in New York for the next week, but a lot of things can change...

This Week's Model: Shu Pei Qin

blog_shupeiqin.jpgIt's been an action-packed 2010 for 20-year-old Chinese model, Shu Pei Qin. In February, Patrick Demarchelier photographed Shu Pei (along with Mirte Maas) for the cover of Chinese Vogue as one of the modeling world's newest faces to watch. Then followed a Gap jeans campaign, the September cover of Chinese Vogue, and most recently a lucrative cosmetics contract with Maybelline. Shu Pei will join veterans Christy Turlington and Erin Wasson at Maybelline with a print campaign debuting later this fall. At the tail end of New York Fashion Week, W sat down with the hard-working, international beauty:

What have you been up to this summer?
I went to the west coast with my family for two weeks before fashion week. I love the weather there. It is so hot in New York this summer.

blog_shu_pei_02.jpgFrom left: Alexander Wang spring 2011; Altuzarra spring 2011

Congratulations on your new Maybelline contract.
Thank you. When I shopped for Maybelline's mascara in drugstores I used to dream how wonderful it would be to become a Maybelline girl one day. When it happened to me I finally understood what it's like to have a dream come true!

Do you feel any pressure as one of a handful of Chinese models who have cracked the Western market?
It has never occurred to me. All I did was work work and work. When it comes to the pressure I think it is more from myself wanting to do everything the best I can.

What's your most recent shopping purchase?
My iPad! I have so much fun with it.

What are your beauty secrets?
Drinking a lot of water. I always carry a bottle of water with me wherever I go. There is also a red lipstick in my purse all the time.

How do you spend your free time?
I love traveling. But on weekdays, after work I will go to try new restaurants with friends. We also cook a lot at home. I love good food.

blog_shu_pei_04.jpgFrom left: Carolina Herrera spring 2011; Jason Wu spring 2011

What are your favorite guilty pleasure foods?
Gelato. I love gelato in Italy. Can't stop eating it when I am in Italy. In New York I substitute it with Pink Berry.

Who are your closest model friends?
Liu Wen and Ming Xi are my close model friends from my home country. Here in New York, Karlie Kloss is such a sweet friend.

What do you see for yourself in the year ahead?
Keep working hard!

This Week's Model: Hilary Rhoda

23-year-old Maryland native Hilary Rhoda is known for her athletic, All-American looks and her strong brows -- which have earned her more than a few Brooke Shields comparisons -- but it was actually Balenciaga's Nicolas Ghesquiere who handpicked Rhoda for his Spring 2006 show, effectively launching her runway career. Rhoda hasn't graced the runway since the Fall 2008 season -- instead, she's focused on being a worldwide face of Estee Lauder, which she signed with in 2007, and appearing in the last two issues of Sports Illustrated, but it sounds like a return to the catwalk could be in the cards...

blog_rhoda_01.jpgFrom left: Jean-Paul Gaultier Couture, spring 2007; Givenchy Couture, spring 2007

Where are you right now?
Driving to the gym in my car, in Manhattan.

What have you been up to this summer? Any vacations or recent travel?
I went on vacation to St. Barts a couple of weeks ago, just for a long weekend. I was down working in Florida, in Miami, recently; I was in LA earlier this summer; and I went home to Maryland for a couple of days. When I have extra time I just go out to the Hamptons, I have a house in Southampton I go out to as much as I possibly can.

What are your Fashion's Night Out plans?
I will be with Estee Lauder at Saks, Lord & Taylor and Derek Lam's store opening.

Any fashion week plans? We heard you were interested in walking in a few fashion shows this upcoming season.
I haven't done shows for the past couple of seasons now, but I'm going to be doing a few during New York Fashion Week, which I'm really excited about. This time I'll really be able to enjoy it instead of having the usual craziness of all four fashion weeks.

blog_rhoda_02.jpgFrom left: Eres, spring/summer 2009; on the cover of Korean Numero, October 2008

What's your most recent shopping purchase?
A baggy sweater by Cut 25 -- do you know that brand? It's black and white, with a leather neckline, from Intermix, and I plan to wear it with black leather pants or skinny jeans.

How do you spend your free time?
I've been meaning to see The Expendables when I have the chance, and I just finished reading Portrait of an Addict as a Young Man while I was in St. Barts. I really liked it, I read it in one day.  And I work out a lot -- obviously, I'm on the way to the gym right now. I feel the best after a workout -- I'm sweaty and exhausted, but it also gives me an energy I really like.

What are your guilty pleasures?
Peanut Butter M&Ms in the fridge, I always have a giant bag. Every cookie and candy I put in the fridge, it always manages to taste better when it's cold.

blog_rhoda_03.jpgFrom left: Balenciaga, spring 2007; as the face of Estee Lauder, fall/winter 2010

Speaking of food, we've heard you don't cook at all.
It's not that I don't want to, it's just that I don't know how. I can only do eggs or pasta, so I order a lot of takeout or go out to eat.

Who are your closest model friends?
Jessica Stam I hang out with a lot; Coco Rocha -- we're always emailing and keeping in touch; and Heidi Mount, I like her, she's nice.

blog_rhoda_baby.jpgRhoda before her modeling days.

What do you see for yourself in the year ahead?
I'm going to be shooting Sports Illustrated again in a couple of months, and I would like to get into more things that show my personality and allow me to speak -- I've been doing a couple of hosting things. I'm working on branching out beyond modeling.

And what about tonight?
I might go to the Soho Grand to meet up with some friends, but otherwise I'm going to be staying home. I worked out this morning, had a shoot this afternoon, and I'm going to work out again now, so I don't know if I'm going to make it, I'm pretty exhausted.

This Week's Model: Angela Lindvall

blog_skinny_banner.jpgblog_angelalindvall_01.jpg-.jpgModeling vet Angela Lindvall saves her fiercest determination for her off-the-runway passion: environmental activism. Last year, after the earthy 31-year-old visited jeweler John Hardy’s headquarters in Bali and became inspired by his company’s dedication to sustainability, she agreed to be the face of Hardy’s latest campaign. This month, Lindvall’s image will appear on ads for Hardy’s new Hijau jewelry line, which includes a charm bracelet designed by the model herself. W spoke with her about her baubles, beliefs and beauty tips.

blog_angelalindvall_03.jpg-.jpgFrom left: Antonio Berardi fall 2006; Paul&Joe fall 2009

What made you want to get involved with the John Hardy line?
I’ve been doing work with different environmental charities for some time, and John Hardy was a sustainable company before it became trendy. When I got to Bali, I saw their headquarters, which were these huge bamboo structures with rice fields, and saw that they’re employing a whole community of people. So we decided to do a collection based on environmentalism, and we’re donating 10 percent of the proceeds to a charity called ForestEthics, which replenishes forests.

What is your favorite piece from the new line?
These little rings that come with or without stones—I like to stack them.

blog_angelalindvall_02.jpgFrom left: On the cover of W in October 1997; as the face of Salvatore Ferragamo, spring 2004

Do you think you will increase your activism in the future?
My ambitions have changed a lot since I started my nonprofit, the Collage Foundation (which supports grassroots environmental projects). I was very “We have to change the world!” But my ambition levels are much simpler now. I value being present and happy. And before, I felt like I had my career in fashion on one side and my passion for environmentalism on the other side. But now, they are starting to connect and it’s really exciting.

What are your beauty secrets?
I think beauty begins with a healthy mental state. Laughter is the key to youth. But eating healthy and pure organic foods and exercising are key. And hydrating—I have this great water filtration system on my house called Kangen.

blog_angelalindvall_05.jpgThe soon-to-be environmental activist

What do you think of the industry today? Are the girls too young and too thin?
I love that fashion is this creative industry that really doesn’t have any boundaries. But I would love to see more diversity, because this industry can feed into women’s neuroses. Fashion should be fun, but there is this body-obsessed, youth-obsessed element that comes with it. As a healthy 31-year-old woman with two young kids, the last thing I should ever be feeling is old or fat.

This Week's Model: Karolina Kurkova

blog_skinny_banner.jpgSix months after home-delivering (!) a bouncing baby boy, Karolina Kurkova is back and better than ever. (Just take a look at that microscopic waist and endless legs on display in June's "Best In Show" feature) She attributes her lightning fast return to form to eating an annoyingly healthy diet (think zero processed foods and gallons of green juices) and shaking her groove thing at Tracy Anderson's studio. Still, she gets the guilts just like every other working mama. Read on and learn how she juggles supermodel-dom with the new-mom thing.

blog_kurkova_01.jpgKurkova in "Best in Show," shot by Craig McDean

You already have your figure back! Did you have a lot of weight to lose?
I didn't gain much weight, and I think the secret was really staying active throughout my pregnancy. I did Pilates, a lot of weight training, I walked a lot and I traveled. I lived my life, you know? And I was eating really healthy, taking good supplements and vitamins, drinking green juices and just making sure I was putting the best stuff in my body. I didn't eat much junk, and I was lucky I didn't really crave it, either. So I'm all about listening to your body. But obviously you want to try to give it more natural foods, and fruits, good vitamins, fish oils, fiber. Lots of fiber when you're pregnant!

So how did you get back in shape?
I've been working a lot with Tracy Anderson at her studio. After I had my baby, I wanted to try something different. I didn't want to be in the gym doing weights. And I like Tracy. She's a working mom like me and she understands that, and understands a woman's body. It's been really fun. I'd done gymnastics and ballet earlier in my life, and she incorporates the barre, and you kind of hang there—it's a bit of a mishmash of everything. A little ballet, a lot of dancing, funk cardio. As a woman, where else can you go and listen to fast music and really dance? Especially after you have a baby, it's not like you have a lot of time to go dance! So it's a great place to just go and be, and feel good, feel sexy and sweat.

blog_kurkova_02.jpgFrom left: A pregnant Kurkova in August 2009; Kurkova at the 2010 Costume Institute gala earlier this month.

Do you follow Tracy's food regimen too?
I haven't tried the food delivery, but I've heard it's good. I just try to eat really healthy. I always do my own thing. We still do a lot of fresh green fruit juices, and try to cook as much as we can so that everything's light, delicious and gluten-free. We don't really eat anything that's white, or processed. And we try to buy things from little farms and local places to support those businesses. I'm a big believer in that.

Are you modeling less now? It sounds like you're still keeping up a pretty intense schedule.
I did take a few months off, to make sure we bonded and established a relationship as a family—not just me and the baby, but my husband, too. But now I'm back to work and it's actually busier than ever. I'm having more fun, and it's almost like I have a higher purpose now. I mean, I never did stuff just for me anyway. I've always kind of done it for everybody around me, to help people and make them happy. I don't look at it like, "Oh, I'm doing it so I can buy a better bag or a new apartment." But definitely, it's challenging. How do you balance being a working woman, a good mom and a wife? It's tough, but kind of exciting, too. It's so easy to be stressed about it and put pressure on yourself. Like, "If I'm not there, I'm not a good mom." I'm just really glad to be back to work, and I'm fortunate that sometimes when I have to go away for a few days, I can take my son. I want to incorporate him into my life as much as possible. And he's getting used to being in different places and around new people. I think he likes it!

This Week's Model: Barbara Palvin

blog_skinny_banner.jpgblog_palvin_01.jpgHungarian Barbara Palvin (left, backstage at Prada) was a tender 13 years old when she was discovered on the streets of Budapest. Three years later, she remains blessedly wide-eyed and youthful, still engaged in sports and close with her teenage friends back home. But that doesn’t mean this pouty-lipped and lusciously-tressed 16-year-old—who was on the Fall 2010 runways of Nina Ricci, Louis Vuitton and Prada and looked smoldering on the cover of Jalouse in April and in a W spread in June—sees modeling as just a hobby. She’s serious about her newfound career, however spontaneously it ignited, and intends to be a fixture in the industry for years to come.

blog_palvin_03.jpgFrom left: Louis Vuitton fall 2010; Prada fall 2010.

Where did you grow up?
In an average family in Budapest. I was born there and we still live there. We often went out of town to a small village in the countryside to visit my grandmother and great-grandmother.

How were you discovered?
It happened three-and-a-half years ago. I was walking on the street with my mother in Budapest, near where I live, when Balazs, who’s now my manager (Icon Model Management), saw me. He asked me if I could go to their office and took some test photos. Then I started modeling.

What do you remember about your debut at the fall Prada show in Milan?
I was very excited—more excited than nervous. To be on a catwalk was one of my biggest dreams. I met famous models, and it was a pleasure to work with Miuccia.

blog_palvin_02.jpgFrom left: Nina Ricci fall 2010; Jalouse cover April 2010

How are you keeping up with your schooling?
It’s hard. I have exams at the end of the year. My friends help me to keep up with the others.

But despite that, you still enjoy your new career?
Yes—I’ve learned so much about life. Working was a new thing; waking up early in the morning and going to bed late at night... But I’ve met a lot of nice people, I've been to New York, London, Paris. I like traveling. Now I cannot imagine my life without modeling.

blog_palvin_05.jpgPalvin in June's "Sweater Girl," shot by Claudia Knoepfel & Stefan Indlekofer.

You have amazing hair. How do you take care of it?
I only wash the top of my hair, near to the skin, and I just rinse the rest, so that shampoo doesn't make it dry. I use conditioners as well, and I let my hair air dry.

Any other beauty secrets?
Personality affects appearance, so I always think positively. I don’t use make-up if it’s not necessary, and I wash my face with cold water twice a day. I don’t like creams on my face.

Tell us three things about yourself that would surprise us.
I play soccer (and I also like watching it on TV)—I usually play striker position on the field. I like singing; traditional Hungarian folk songs are my favorites. And I like Japanese animation films (animes) and mangas.

What is one thing you can't live without?
Music.

What scares you?
Certain insects.

This Week's Model: Kirby Kenny

blog_skinny_banner.jpgblog_kirby_01.jpgKirby Kenny has us seeing double, and we like it. The 17-year-old model from Mendham, NJ is every bit as alluring and beguiling as her fraternal twin sister Ann (see our recent interview with Ann HERE), but very much her own person. Although the sisters rely on one another to test poses, Kirby—who dyed her hair blonde about a year ago—has come into her own this year walking for Marc Jacobs, Topshop, Antonio Berardi, Burberry, Pringle of Scotland and Just Cavalli.

We've heard you and Ann used to be avid lacrosse players. Do you guys still play?
We don't really have time but we still have our sticks. If we're stressed or we need to unwind, we still go out in the backyard to play.

Do you have any pre-game rituals from lacrosse that you've used before a fashion show?
I'm very into writing down my goals. For lacrosse, I'd write down what I would want to happen in that game. It's the same thing with modeling. A couple of my goals for Fashion Week this year were to not get competitive with Ann, to walk for Burberry and to be happy no matter what.

kirby_kenny_marc_jacobs_f10.JPGFrom left: Just Cavalli fall 2010; Marc Jacobs fall 2010

Do you think that the industry naturally pushes you and your sister to be competitive?
Naturally, yes. But I don't think it's intentional.

How do people tell you and Ann apart?
We used to have the same hair color so it was hard to tell us apart. People would call us "twin" or "Kenny twin." They used to not be able to but now that I'm blonde, they definitely can.

Who does your color?
Lina at Ion Salon.

kirby_kenny_interview_miu_miu.jpgAnn and Kirby Kenny in "Twin Peaks" shot by Mark Segal for Interview's March 2010 issue

The editorial that you and Ann did for Interview was really beautiful. What was it like doing that togther?
Well, it's fun because we can hang out. On set, if someone's like, "Ann, I love what you're doing there," it really helps me. And if I'm ever nervous, I can be like, "Ann, you go first!"

Before you guys got signed, were fashion magazines part of your world?
Yes. I would be bored after homework and we would look at magazines. Ann and I made a beauty book of our favorite campaigns and runway shows.

You're an American in an industry dominated by international faces. What's that like?
I like being an American model—we're so rare! One thing I've noticed is that the parents of American girls are much more protective. At first, it was hard for us to convince our parents to let us model.

Do you have any beauty secrets you can share with us?
My hair tends to get frizzy and big, so I wear a beanie hat to bed.

kirby_kenny_burberry_pringle_f10.JPGFrom left: Pringle of Scotland fall 2010; Burberry Prorsum fall 2010

Are you planning to go to college? I definitely want to go to college. I want to do something in film, maybe editing or directing. I want to stay in the New York area and be near my family.

It's prom season. Any plans for going?
Actually, I was never really into the whole school prom thing. But I'm going to my friend's beach house for an afterparty.

This Week's Model: Anna J.

blog_skinny_banner.jpgblog_annaj_01.jpgTwenty-two-year-old Anna Maria Jagodzinska—otherwise known as Anna J—has packed a lot into her short career. Since 2003, the green-eyed cover girl (left) has starred on four Vogue covers, walked every major runway, and landed ad campaigns for H&M, David Yurman and, most recently, Tommy Hilfiger. All this, even including a hiatus between 2006 and 2008 to focus on school.

blog_annaj_02.jpgFrom left: Givenchy fall 2010; Stella McCartney fall 2010

How did you get discovered?
At the age of 14 I sent some of the pictures my mom took of me to a Polish agency.

What's been your most memorable experience (good or bad) in modeling so far?
I'd rather focus on the good ones instead of the bad ones! My most memorable good experience was definitely shooting the Chloe campaign in Cape Town. I was lucky enough to stay after the shoot to explore the city—it's breathtaking.

blog_annaj_04.jpgFrom left: Chloe ad campaign 2009; Italian Vogue May 2009

Tell us a little about your childhood.
I come from a small town in Poland called Sierpc. I lived there with my parents—they still live there—and my brother. There is no cinema, so after school me and my friends used to hang out at the swimming pool. That's how I got into swimming competitions. I also did my lifeguard certification.

blog_annaj_05.jpg Tell us about this photo (above).
That's me with my older brother, his name is Lukasz. I'm about 5 years old and it was taken on our lake house property 20 minutes outside my hometown.

Where do you live in New York City?
I'm currently living in the Financial District but I have only one month on my lease. I like it, but it's not my favorite neighborhood. I've lived in many neighborhoods in my six years here—the Upper West Side has been my favorite.

blog_annaj_03.jpgFrom left: Etro fall 2009; Proenza Schouler fall 2009

Which other models have you become friends with?
I've become good friends with Edita Vilkeviciute, we work quite often together and we always have great time.

What's your fashion weakness?
A nice piece of jewelry. And I do have a soft heart for handbags.

blog_annaj_06.jpgTommy Hilfiger ad campaign 2010

What scares you?
Lack of health.

Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us.
I like to do Polish crosswords, and once a year I try to go on either a yoga, hiking or horseback riding trip all by myself.

This Week's Model: Liu Wen

blog_skinny_banner.jpgblog_liu_01.jpgTwenty-two year old Chinese model Liu Wen made headlines last week when it was announced she was made the first Asian face of Estée Lauder. Breaking ethnic barriers in the industry is no new feat for the Yongzhou-born beauty—last year, she became the first East Asian model to walk the Victoria's Secret fashion show. Liu started her career at age 18, when she entered The New Silk Road World model contest. (She says she wanted the money for a laptop.) Since signing with Marilyn Agency in 2007, she has graced two international Vogue covers, booked editorials in magazines from V to W (check her out in March's "Chic Mystique"), appeared in ads for Calvin Klein, The Gap, and DKNY, and walked just about every runway that matters. By all measures, she has it all: the height (she's 5'10"), the walk, the expressive features, the stamina and, of course, the flawless skin.

blog_liu_03.jpgFrom left: Balenciaga fall 2010; Maison Martin Margiela fall 2010

The news about the Lauder contract has been everywhere.
I used to see Estée Lauder's ads everywhere in the subways of Beijing, and I thought how wonderful it would be if the model on them was myself! Now that this dream has come true, so I'm sincerely happy.

What do you remember about walking the Chanel and Louis Vuitton runways for the first time?
I remember that 2008 was my first try at walking the international runways, and also my first time at Chanel. There was a carousel there that looked like it came out of a fairytale. First time at Louis Vuitton was Spring 2009 season, and I remember that the colors of the clothes were very dreamy.

blog_liu_04.jpgFrom left: Vogue Portugal November 2009; Barneys spring/summer 2009 ad campaign

What's it like when you return to China? Do fans recognize you?
I think people first started recognizing me around two years ago. First in small clothing stores, then others would check if I was Liu Wen when I went to see movies, and now even when I step in Starbucks in China many people recognize me. I think people recognize me sometimes on the streets of New York and the Paris subways, too.

What does your family do? Do you have sisters and brothers, and do they live in China?
My parents are very humble people who have simple lives...they live in a pleasant little town in China. No one else in my family works in the fashion industry. I'm the only child.

blog_liu_07.jpgThe young future model

How does your family feel about your modeling?
They are very supportive of me modeling, not because they want me to become a huge star...but just as long as it makes me happy. During the hardest times they always encouraged me to stay strong.

blog_liu_05.jpgIn W's March "Chic Mystique" portfolio by Mario Sorrenti

We heard that before you were a model, you were a tour guide.
I studied tourism in school and had plans to become a tour guide, but truthfully I never really worked full-time as one. My first real job was as a model.

What do you think you want do do after a career in modeling?
Modeling definitely won't last for a lifetime, but I think I will continue to work in the fashion industry somehow afterwards.

What do you like to do on a day off?
Exercise, surf the web, and cook delicious Chinese cuisine!

blog_liu_10.jpgBackstage at Twenty8Twelve's fall 2009 runway show.

What's your favorite unhealthy food?
French fries and ice cream.

Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us.
Even if I eat a lot of ice cream I still won't gain weight—and ice cream can get me pretty hyper, whereas coffee actually puts me to sleep.

Tell us one or two of your beauty secrets.
Drink lots of water, eat lots of fruit—and rest well and whenever possible!

This Week's Model: Ann Kenny

blog_skinny_banner.jpgblog_kenny_headshot.jpgAnn Kenny didn't want to wait for a modeling scout to discover her at a local shopping mall. (Says the Mendham, NJ native wryly, "There aren't many scouts in New Jersey!") So when she and her fraternal twin sister, Kirby, turned 16 last year, they snapped some Polaroids of each other and, without telling their parents, sent them into DNA Model Management. After DNA called asking to meet them and their family, they had to trick their mom into coming into the city with them, explains Ann, a pale-skinned, piercingly blue-eyed untraditional beauty. "We convinced her to go shopping and then said, uh, by the way..." The sisters were signed by the agency almost immediately, and not long afterwards, Ann was booked for a string of major Fall/Winter 2010 shows, including Marc Jacobs, Prada, Proenza Schouler, Missoni, Richard Chai, BCBG Max Azria, Christopher Kane, Burberry, Prada and Dries Van Noten. Not bad for your first time out.

Did you and Kirby always want to model together?
We always talked about it. Kirby was like, "I don't know about you but eventually I'm going to end up there." And I was like, "Yeah, well you're not going to be there without me!" I would never be able to do it, and she would never be able to do it, without one another. We're best friends.

Do you guys share clothes?
Yeah, we share all our clothes. Because we just figure, we fit into the same things! But we've never dressed alike. We've never worn the same outfit, even when we were kids.

The shoot you guys did for Interview together had a kind of creepy vibe.
Yeah, we kind of wanted to capture that relationship that twins have. It came naturally to us. We shot it at an old mansion in Yonkers. The house had no heat at all, and we were in the Miu Miu spring line. So we were very cold, but it was so fun.

We've heard you are, or were, an avid lacrosse player. Do you still play?
No. Before I even pursued modeling, I was feeling a disconnect with the sport. If you're not 100% into it, you start to wonder if it's meant to be. Since I had another opportunity that I was kind of having more fun with, I kind of decided to leave that chapter behind.

Your first show ever was BCBG. How did it feel to be on a runway?
I was nervous for the run-through but after the run through, I wasn't nervous. It was like being in a school play, you don't see anything but lights. Now I don't really get nervous for a show.

Even when you open a big show like Proenza Schouler?
I do get excited to open. I love to be able to be the first look, like, this is a precursor to what's going to happen.

You and your sister still live at home with your parents. Do you have a favorite local spot?
Yes! My mom, my sister and I went on a nature trail in Peapack, NJ and it had a restaurant at the very top, The Natirar. They cook with mostly local ingredients. The best salmon I've ever had in my life!

Do you have a boyfriend?
No. I really like being single right now. I just find it liberating to be on my own. I'm embracing that right now.

What about any plans for college?
I definitely want to go to college. Once I'm ready for a change again, I'll know it. I have a pretty good intuition, so I feel like that will guide me there.

Do you think you and your sister will transition out of modeling at the same time?
Yeah, we're pretty much like that.
