Going Greek at the Belvedere Hotel

blog_belvedere_03.jpgFashion folk have been flocking this summer to Mykonos, and the hotel of choice is the Belvedere, where Matthew Williamson, Dean and Dan Caten, Juilen MacDonald, and Neil Barrett, among others, have checked in. The hotel is the latest makeover project for design wizard David Rockwell. After reinventing the Academy Awards, he has turned his magic on the 48-room boutique hotel, a long-time island dowager. While the poolside branch of Matsuhisa, with its white marble sushi bar and blooming Bourgainvillea vines, is the coolest place to hang on the island, the real attractions are the new Rockwell-designed rooms and suites, which blend luxurious natural materials like hammered metal and carved rosewood with high-tech lighting and electronics. But the designer himself says his work pales next to the place’s natural attraction—its views of the Aegean Sea. “That incredible blue backdrop is the payoff. I couldn’t choreograph anything to top that. Mykonos is like a fairy tale island.”
