Backstory: Major Tom

Tom Ford’s debut women’s wear presentation ( as seen in the January issue ) wasn’t the first time the designer sent out mouthwatering clothing—the man has been making us drool since the mid-Nineties. Here, Alex White, W’s Creative Fashion Director, rounds up some of her favorite Ford looks from past issues of the magazine.

“It was Tom’s debut collection for Gucci, and my debut Gucci shoot for W. Tom Ford in the Nineties was seminal.”

“This coat, from Gucci’s fall 2000 collection, was just so luxurious. It looked simply feline.”

“For Gucci, an Italian luxury house, to send out a white T-shirt as a swimsuit was a statement. It just oozed sex and made you want to have the body to wear it. We put it on Kate Moss for the cover.”

“This was from the Kate Moss tribute issue, and for the cover I wanted to put her in a gorgeous red siren dress.”

“This dress, from Yves Saint Laurent’s fall 2004 collection, was another favorite. Snow White and Little Red Riding Hood, all in one.”
