A few days before new designer Sofia Sizzi’s fashion week
presentation I was invited down to her showroom to preview her debut
collection, Giulietta. Sizzi, who has worked in design at Gucci and
Calvin Klein, wanted to create a collection “committed to Italian
tradition and quality craftsmanship with a modern silhouettes,”
all while embodying the spirit of the women that inspired her. Her fall
inspirations came from 1960’s Italian classics like Federico
Fellini’s “Juliet of the Spirits” and Mario
Monicelli’s “The Girl with a Pistol,” in which
actress Monica Vitti dresses in conservative black dresses that still
appear current after all these years.

Some of the highlights from Sizzi’s formal presentation of
Giulietta during New York Fashion Week include a covetable black cape
coat, a head-to-toe printed blouse and pant look inspired by the ceiling
of an Italian basilica and an ankle-length lace skirt hand made in the
same pattern. Each look was accessorized with leather-free shoes in
satin and velvet, a perfect felt hat reminiscent of the 70’s and
large jeweled earrings—all in tune with today’s art house
vixen.
