Nicholas Kirkwood's Architectural Heels for Peter Pilotto
In anticipation of the May Design issue (on newsstands April 19), I perused the SS11 collections for shoes that brought forth an architectural element in addition to their aesthetic appeal. In a sea of color-blocked wedges and 70’s-inspired platforms, Peter Pilotto’s second collaboration with Nicholas Kirkwood showcased a standout selection of sculptural sandals with hollowed-out metal heels. With stacked leather on the outside (creating a wood-like effect) and brightly colored lacquer finish inside, each sandal is constructed with two horizontal straps varying from moon shadow prints to a graphic tweed texture (shown here). Pilotto drew inspiration from the late artist Donald Judd who was known for utilizing industrial materials and creating hollow, minimalist sculptures. Like Judd, Pilotto sought to create depth and texture by combining different materials, finishes and shapes.
