Almost instantly after Tocca launched in 1994, fans like Christy
Turlington and Helena Christensen began snapping up its signature pastel
eyelet shift dresses and, later on, the luxe candles. But while the brand’s home and beauty lines have been going strong ever since, its
ready-to-wear has been in decline. No more. Emma Fletcher, late of the
cult NoLIta store Lyell, has taken the design helm and is setting about
revamping the Tocca look.
“This is a little more modern and simple,” she says of her two recent collections, which steer clear of the embroidery and embellishments that were once a trademark of the brand. For fall, Fletcher included Victorian-style blouses and dresses trimmed in French lace from Solstice (above) and a cozy knit dress made by a women’s crochet circle in Bolivia. Spring brings more vintagey elements, like a print for silk shorts and tops inspired by a 1911 stationery card and airy tulle lingerie dotted with a daisy motif.
Now the mother of two, Fletcher admits that these days, she’s less likely to be her own muse. “The Tocca girl is a way cooler version of me,” she says, laughing. “All I do now is go to work and come home.” (at Tocca, 605 Hudson Street, New York; $120–$650)
