A New Speakeasy Arrives in New York

Hidden below West 14th Street and camouflaged by the sports lounge Snap sits Stash, the latest hidden bar to creep into Manhattan. Patrons enter through an unmarked door—though when we visited, it was “marked” by a crowd and a bouncer. Artwork of comely ladies completely bedazzled in glitter courtesy of Boom Boom Room bouncer Richard Alvarez sets the tone: a polished, cool, but most definitely not low-key speakeasy.

Down a steep flight of stairs is the 1500-square-foot jewel box of a space. The décor is a showstopper: mahogany and hickory parquet line the floor and walls, and hand-laid mosaic tiles cover the glistening, domed ceiling. Not to mention the way-cool Lindsey Adelman lights over the 15-foot bar. True to the name, guests can stash their bags and coats in hidden drawers and compartments inside tables and under the red banquettes.

And now for the important part: the drinks. Mixologist Rael Petit from Mulberry Project and MPD crafted the menu, which includes gems like the Hidden Agenda, a concoction of gin, Clementine, rosemary, rosewater, simple syrup, and lemon juice. But of course, the bartenders can also dream up custom creations.

Stash is open 10pm—4am Tuesday through Saturday.
