BIG MOMENT ON CAMPUS: SCAD LACOSTE

This weekend, the Savannah College of Art And Design (SCAD) will celebrate the opening of La Maison Basse, a gorgeous addition to their bucolic campus in Provence, France. The five-building complex has served many purposes over the last few centuries- a silkworm farm, an inn, and as the carriage house of Marquis de Sade.

The infamous aristocrat, politician and libertine lived just up the hill at his main property the Lacoste Chateau—which is now owned by Pierre Cardin. Like SCAD, the designer, has helped restore this medieval village town to its former glory over the last decade.

La Maison Basse will serve as headquarters for a wide range of classes in and workshops in art, design and architecture for students and visiting artists.

And just up the road on SCAD’s main campus, visitors can check out the works of Algerian-born photographer Mohamed Bourouissa. His show  “Le Miroir” at the school’s  La Galerie Pfriem features images of working class youth of African and Arab origins in France. In this exhibit, Bourouissa challenges the notions of nationality, identity and belonging in these highly charged works. (Open to the public until November 23rd.) While SCAD’s Provencale campus may seem like a quiet paradise, the art and ideas are certainly provocative.
