One piece from the Architecture for Dogs collection.Kenya Hara, the Japanese designer and art director for Muji since 2001, doesn’t own a dog, but as evidenced by his latest project he clearly has respect for them. Initiated for the purpose of making man’s best friend happy, Architecture for Dogs is an ingenious collection of breed-specific structures that Han has commissioned from eleven notable architects and designers. Among them: Shigeru Ban, who created a paper-tube maze for the papillon and Kazuyo Sejima, who conceived a plush, fiberboard cloud for the bichon frisé. Blueprints for each of the designs are available free on the website (architecturefordogs.com), and Hara, who himself created a stairway for a teacup poodle, encourages people to try them out at home. Basel-goers can view all thirteen structures at Design Miami, where they make their worldwide debut this week.
