Must Visit: Uma by COMO Punakha

A five-hour drive might seem like quite a schlep to get to a hotel, but once your car crests over the final steep hill as you reach the secluded resort and you glimpse the birds-eye view across surreally-green terraced fields, you’ll know it was all worth it. Uma by COMO Punakha, a new 11-room property (including to free-standing luxury private villas), is nestled in a remote area of the Punakha Valley in Bhutan and offers easy access to historic sites like the imposing Punakha Dzong, activities like white water rafting, hiking, and cycling, and a traditional holistic spa retreat for “days off.” And for the particularly adventurous, embark on a multi-day side trip to the Bumdra Monastery Camp, the hotel’s wilderness campsite high in the Himalayas and accessed only via remote mountain paths. It’s an experience that’s sure to rival that first harrowing ascent to the hotel.
