Five Things to Know About Demna Gvasalia
He and his fellow designers maintained anonymity when the label first launched, but they still spoke out about their process. “If there’s one word that’s taboo for us,” one of the Vetements collaborators told W in August 2014, “It’s ‘sophistication.’”
He’s known for deconstruction. “By making the sleeves look like they’re falling off, or the shoulders like they’re slouching, you create a nonchalance,” Gvasalia told W earlier this year. “The construction dictates the attitude.”
Gvasalia will not only have to follow Alexander Wang’s footsteps, but an impressive roster of former design heads that includes Nicolas Ghesquière, Josephus Thimister, Michel Goma, and, of course, Cristobal Balenciaga himself.
His first show will be held in March 2016 during Paris Fashion Week.
