No one can pull off barely-there makeup like Tilda Swinton and still look like an ethereal beauty. NO. ONE.

Reese Witherspoon, Elle McPherson, Jessica Biel, and Heidi Klum had a breeziness to their hair and a natural glow to their makeup. Such a breath of fresh air.

We THINK she was wearing a white gown, but all we remember about Angelina Jolie were those red lips that strongly channeled Robert Palmer’s back-up band in his “Addicted to Love” video.

Whether down and swooped over like Mary J Blige, pinned loosely like Emma Stone and Kate Winslet, or graced with a highfalutin Cartier headband on Charlize, side-parted styles created interesting new looks on these ladies.

There’s always a risk of looking a bit cartoony when doing a retro look, but it really worked on some of the younger set. Nicole Ritchie’s fountain-head pony conjured up Barbara Eden’s I Dream of Jeanie hair, but it was done so beautifully—and supported with understated makeup—that it looked quite elegant. Zooey Deschanel seemed to drop the Loretta Lynn tease she had going to a TV darling That Girl Marlo Thomas. Julie Bowen, on the other hand, should stick to contemporary. That woman rocks the understated sexy look like no one else, but if her attempt was Mad Men, it missed the mark, landing somewhere between Donna Reed and Marilyn from The Munsters.

Kelly Osbourne’s lavender hues give the term “Blue Haired” a youthful transfusion.

Loved Jane Fonda’s hair. I’m just not sure women over 60 should wear lip gloss.
