Science Meets Magic at Iris Van Herpen Haute Couture

Iris Van Harpen Haute Couture Fashion Week Fall 2017

Backstage at her inaugural Paris Couture show, where she presented as a guest of the calendar, Iris Van Herpen said her Fall 2016 collection was inspired by sound waves, reinterpreted in physical form. It’s visible in the lines radiating outwards in her designs, the meticulous pleats, the cathedral setting complete with organ where Van Herpen elected to show. But for all the hard science Van Herpen incorporates into her collections — she carved out a niche in 3-D printing, and her previous ready-to-wear collection utilized television projection technology — there’s also a softness in color palette, in the delicate movement of the gowns, captured here by photographer Isabel Martinez, and in the zen sound installation composed by Kazuya Nagaya that accompanied the models’ choreographed motions.
