Jane’s Addiction: Baby, It’s Cold Outside
There were several cool looks at the spring 2013 New York fashion shows, but my favorite was Orlando Pita’s ladylike updo with pieces of nearly neon hair woven into it at Oscar de la Renta (left). As soon as my hair gets long enough, I am definitely going to try this style.
Make is a new cosmetics brand that sets aside one-third of its revenue to help women’s start-up cooperatives in the U.S. It’s also been tapping different artisans to collaborate on various projects. Case in point: This month, makeup artist Ayami Nishimura and interior designer Faye Toogood present the Alchemy collection. My favorites are the aptly named Molten Shadows in cool Pewter (left) or warm Bronze, which go on like frosting, feel like lotion, and blend like a dream. ($12, weseebeauty.com)
I’ve been discovering fresh ways to experiment with my makeup, thanks to Sigma Beauty’s Extravaganza Complete Kit, which contains 29 brushes of all shapes, handle lengths, and even different hair types. I particularly like the Large Angled Contour (below, far left), with which I’ve been attempting to bring out my cheekbones. Let’s just say practice makes perfect. ($510, sigmabeauty.com)
Since I started coloring my hair more than 20 years ago, it’s become less soft, and my highlights can get a bit brassy. But I’ve found some help with the violet pigment in Sachajuan Silver Shampoo ($28, sachajuan.com), which keeps the blonde (left) from venturing into orange territory. Pantene AgeDefy Conditioner ($9, pantene.com), meanwhile, smooths pesky split ends as well as unruly grays. And once a week I bring a magazine into the bathtub after I slather NeuMoisture Intensive Masque ($35, neumabeauty.com for stores) all over my head. The treatment smells divine, and it’s packed with plant extracts and essential oils—which is why I let it stay on much longer than the recommended two to three minutes.
