In John Messinger’s Dreams
From afar, the large-scale pieces in John Messinger’s new exhibition “We Dream Alone” look like painted grids. In reality, the pieces are three dimensional “hand-made Polaroid tapestries,” Messinger says, and are comprised of hundreds of photographs hand-stitched together. To create the photos, the New York-based artist shot found images displayed on a large computer monitor with a Polaroid camera—instant film, perhaps, but certainly not instant art.
John Messinger “We Dream Alone,” curated by Lyle Rexer, is at UNIX Gallery, 532 W. 24th St., through January 8th, 2015.
