Whether hanging with Jay Z on the Brooklyn Bridge or taking Mick Jagger on his first-ever trip to a 99-cent store, the director Mark Romanek has not only transformed some of the greatest hits of the past 20 years into almost equally memorable music videos—take “99 Problems,” or Madonna’s “Bedtime Story,” which is even in MoMA’s permanent collection—but also captured their stars up-close in moments of downtime, like Johnny Cash comfortably at home in Tennessee. Romanek’s new exhibition “Snapshots,” up at Colette in Paris through February 11, puts those photos on display for the first time ever, showcasing the likes of Kanye West, Leonard Cohen, Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, Thurston Moore, Gwen Stefani, and even Robin Williams on the first, off-the-cuff take.
