The deserts of California, Nevada, New Mexico, and Arizona have long provided fertile inspiration for artists, writers, and photographers like Ansel Adams, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Joan Didion. Dior’s artistic director Maria Grazia Chiuri tapped into the southwestern spirit for the Cruise 2018 collection, her first-ever resort show for the brand. The collection showed in Calabasas’s Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve, just outside Los Angeles and featured wide-brimmed hats, embroidered denim, and crocheted dresses, as well as Chiuri’s now-trademark embellished mesh gowns and high-waisted briefs. Behind the scenes of the show, models like Zuzu Tadeushuk, Amanda Googe, and Maartje Verhoef lounged in the shade of tents and explored the desert dunes; Tadeushuk brought her ever-present journal along to document the whole thing. See the 19-year-old model and artist’s behind-the-scenes diary of the Cruise 2018 show, here.

The Location: Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve. Home to large spiders, rattle snakes, and, for one day, a whole lot of models.
