See Rodarte’s Triumphant Fairy-Tale Return to New York Fashion Week
On Sunday night, after a few sweltering days of New York Fashion Week, a torrential downpour swept the city—fortunate for those looking for a break in the heat, but not so much for Kate and Laura Mulleavy, who at that exact time scheduled Rodarte’s runway show to take place in a vast, green-filled cemetery (read: outside) in the East Village. But fashion is all about the unexpected, and who knows that better than the California natives, who have cultivated a cult following through the years thanks to their surprising, dreamlike creations. So with the help of a few dozen clear umbrellas, the show went on. Notably, the Spring 2019 collection also marked Rodarte’s return to New York after decamping to Paris for a few seasons, and what a homecoming it was, with all the hallmarks of a signature Rodarte show: frothy layers of tulle, floral appliqués, vibrant lace, some lamé for good measure, and Oscar winner Brie Larson in the front row. In the end, some wet fashion editors be damned, the rain turned out to only add to the fairytale of it all. Welcome back.
