What It Looks Like When Dustin Yellin, Roe Ethridge, and Taryn Simon Go Back to Art School

It’s been decades since Keith Haring was reportedly expelled from New York’s School of Visual Arts for graffitiing its walls with Jean-Michel Basquiat, but SVA’s halls have hardly been luminary-less in the time since. For the last 25 years, the school’s photography and video department has paired its BFA students up with everyone from Ryan McGinley to Laurie Simmons—a tradition they’ve reprised this year, as showcased in Mentors, an exhibition up at the SVA Chelsea Gallery through this weekend. There, the next wave of McGinleys has teamed up with full-time photographers like Olivia Bee, Roe Ethridge, and Tim Barber; artists like Dustin Yellin, Taryn Simon, and Hank Willis Thomas; photo directors like the New York Times Magazine‘s Kathy Ryan and New York‘s Jody Quon; and gallery owners like Pace/MacGill Gallery’s Peter MacGill. Study up on the results, here.
