What New York Fashion Designers Actually Wear

Kym Ellery

We love to ask fashion designers about their daily uniforms, which are often quite different from the looks they put on their runway. Here, we round up a few of our favorite soldiers of fashion, just in time for New York Fashion Week.

1

Brother Vellies’ Aurora James “I’m a denim girl, but love to mix it up with overalls, vests and lots of different cuts. I typically pair jeans with a furry shoe of sorts and I’m often without a handbag at all.”

Tibi’s Amy Smilovic “I have a core uniform that I wear at least twice a week—a navy silk sweatshirt and navy pin stripe blazer (Tibi), vintage 1990s Levis (eBay, $4), and a pair of trainers.”

Ellery’s Kym Ellery “Most days I wear slim black pants and a black raglan crepe top that I’ve had in my collections for many years. I just love to be comfortable. To me, comfort is almost as important as style itself.”

Erin Fetherston “I usually wear pieces from my collection mixed together with simple basics. Lately, I’ve been wearing a lot of fitted summer sweaters with voluminous Erin Fetherston skirts. I also love anything with a shirt collar.”

Katie Ermilio “I live in jeans, sneakers, and, in the winter, an oversized sweater.”

Katie Gallagher “Currently a black romper with a Katie Gallagher bodysuit underneath and a black vintage kimono on top. When I’m designing or taking work meetings, I like to keep my daytime ensembles simple.”

Ohne Titel’s Alexa Adams and Flora Gill “AA: I love mixing hard and soft. A textured cotton sweater layered over a leather pleated skirt, and stacked silver cuffs by Anndra Neen. FG: I wear a lot of tailored jackets with interesting details over layered knits. I love pattern, print and stripes.”
