Growing Pains

Adult Beginners premieres in New York.

Rose Byrne

Adult Beginners, Ross Katz’s new film, tells the story of Jake (Nick Kroll) a reluctant adult on the verge of entrepreneurial success until his company crashes on the eve of its big launch. With his Manhattan social life in shambles, Jake seeks refuge at his childhood home upstate where his sister (Rose Byrne) resides with her husband (Bobby Cannavale) and their three-year-old son. After years of alienating his family, Jake takes a job as manny to his nephew and grows into an adult in the process. “I’ve had a number of moments where I hit rock bottom, and I had to start from the beginning,” explained director Ross Katz at the New York premiere on Tuesday night hosted by The Cinema Society and Brooks Brothers. “When I decided to stop producing and start directing I really had to start over and it was very scary, but I felt like I had to do it…The movie is really about finding yourself as an adult, and coming of age again.” After the screening a resplendent Rose Byrne dressed in Altuzarra headed downtown with the rest of the cast where guests including Olivia Wilde, Jason Sudeikis, and Stellan Skarsgard sipped cocktails named Swimmer\’s Sauce, The Manny, and Jake\’s Escape at the Jimmy at the James Hotel.
