Amber Heard and Elon Musk Prove How to Breakup on Instagram

A picture is worth a thousand words—or, in this case, an Instagram post is worth two comments and then a follow-up Instagram post to obliquely address those comments.

Amber Heard—who is currently sporting red hair to play Mera the mermaid in the upcoming Aquaman—recently posted a picture of herself posing like another famous redheaded mermaid, Ariel, with a fork in her hair (or, as Ariel would say, a dinglehopper). To which, Amber’s ex, billionaire PayPal co-founder Elon Musk, commented “V cute ❤️.” He likes to get personal on Insta, you see.

Soon, people were tagging Elon in the comments, asking why he was commenting when the pair had just broken up. So the tech mogul took to comments to clarify their confusing status with a longer comment, writing:

Btw, just to clear up some of the press storm this weekend, although Amber and I did break up, we are still friends, remain close and love one another. Long distance relationships when both partners have intense work obligations are always difficult, but who knows what the future holds.

“Who knows what the future holds” certainly seems like a hint that they might get back together some day. After all, Musk did marry and divorce Westworld actress Talulah Riley twice. (He was also married to and has five children with Justine Musk.)

Once news stories about the comment began trickling out, Heard also posted her own follow-up breakup message to Instagram alongside pictures of the words “Give” and “Love” and “Joy.” Her caption reads:

Being in the public eye means having to explain yourself to so many people, so much of the time. In this case, I’d like to remain more quiet. Although we have broken up, Elon and I care deeply for one another and remain close. Thank you for the continued support, respect, and privacy during these difficult, very human times.

So, they’ve broken up, they remain friends, they want privacy, and Amber’s not gonna talk about it—anymore than she already has. Fair enough! We can only hope that they both find happiness and continue to post about their feelings on social media for us to peruse.
