Ariana Grande is letting pictures speak for themselves, including a new one of her recently deceased ex-boyfriend Mac Miller. After news of the rapper’s death, reportedly from cardiac arrest following a drug overdose, broke on Friday, many celebrities used social media to share their grief and post condolences, including Solange and Chance the Rapper. Some Twitter and Instagram users, though, directed their anger over Miller’s premature passing toward Grande. Grande and Miller dated for two years, and his issues with substance abuse seem to have been a factor in their breakup; Grande is now engaged to Saturday Night Live cast member Pete Davidson, of course. These hurtful and abusive comments received swift backlash, as many pointed out that women are not responsible for the actions of the men they associate with, and that drug abuse and overdose are because of addiction, not heartbreak.

Grande was forced to disable commenting on her Instagram page, but she has now posted an image of Miller in tribute. In the photo, uploaded late on Saturday, Miller looks up at the camera at, presumably, Grande, sitting on the grass in front of her sneaker-clad feet. There’s no caption, but the black and white picture is heartbreaking nonetheless. Anyone who has lost a loved one will understand how precious every memory is.

Grande is no stranger to tragedy. In May 2017, a suicide bomber detonated an explosive outside of a concert arena where she had just performed a show in Manchester, England, killing himself and 22 other people. In addition to headlining a relief concert just weeks after the incident, Grande also grappled with the attack on her new album, Sweetener.

We can only hope that Miller’s friends, family ,and fans find some measure of peace with this sad news, eventually.
