Hayward House

The handbag designer talks about her new store.

Hayward House.

Inspired by her illustrious family members (among them: her father, the actor and photographer Dennis Hopper; mother, the actress and author Brooke Hayward; maternal grandfather, the agent and producer Leland Hayward; step-grandmother, the style icon Slim Keith; and step-grandfather, the actor Henry Fonda) Marin Hopper’s luxury bag line Hayward comes with a legacy most new brands would kill for. Thus selling her designs on a department store counter wasn’t going to cut it. “We wanted a place where we could tell our whole story,” says Hopper whose new store Hayward House opens today on the Upper East Side. Located in a four-story mansion that the architect Grosvenor Atterbury built in 1906 and lived in with his family, the richly appointed shop offers ample room to showcase all of Hopper’s wares (which aside from bags now includes jewelry, gloves, cashmere scarves, and a fragrance), as well as a curated selection of 1970s art books, textiles, furniture, and photographs taken by her father. “This store really captures the essence of my family,” says Hopper, “and its truly American mix of baronial East Coast and Hollywood.”
