Step Up!
Fresh off the heels of the wildly successful Fabergé Big Egg Hunt, Studio in a School is presenting yet another stylish endeavor: “Stepping Up for Art.” Spearheaded by 16-year-old art world progeny India Wolf, and in collaboration with Gagosian Gallery and Charlotte Olympia, the non-profit organization enlisted 20 contemporary artists to customize Olympia’s “Dolly” platform heel: Marilyn Minter furnished her shoes in a blue M&M print; Laurie Simmons photographed them on her lifelike dolls; Ed Ruscha went the minimalist route, printing “GO SO; SO GO” on the platforms in his signature typeface; and Maira Kalman removed the heels and bound each shoe in tissue and twine. Studio in a School, which brings the visual arts to under-funded New York City public schools, also invited children from their partnering schools to put their own spin on the shoes. The works are for sale privately for collectors, supporters, and, presumably, shoe-lovers, with all proceeds benefitting the non-profit.
All works will be on view at Gagosian Gallery, 980 Madison Avenue on May 2nd, 3rd, and 5th.
