Emma Stone Is a Serious Actress, Just Like Cate Blanchett

At least, that’s what her red carpet look is telling us. We’re not arguing.

Actress Emma Stone had flexed her comedic chops prior to her role in Birdman, Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Oscar-winning film that brought Michael Keaton his comeback role, but it wasn’t until that film that she reached the Oscar radar. Now, she can’t stay away from the winner’s circle: Her latest part alongside Ryan Gosling in Damien Chazelle’s La La Land (Chazelle’s previous effort, 2014’s Whiplash, came up against Birdman in many of that season’s awards) is already earning Oscar buzz, though it has yet to premiere to wider audiences.

But La La Land has been making the festival rounds, and at its latest appearance, at Los Angeles’s AFI Fest on Tuesday evening, Stone channeled a film icon of the previous generation: Cate Blanchett. Blanchett has favored Armani couture pieces on the red carpet, opting for an updated old-Hollywood glamour, and it’s a look that suits Stone equally well. Hollywood has found its next Cate Blanchett.

Who: Emma Stone.

When: Tuesday, November 15.

Where: The AFI Film Festival screening of her new film with Ryan Gosling, Damien Chazelle’s La La Land, in Los Angeles, California.

What: A black velvet Armani Privé Fall 2016 gown with shoulder and waist ruffle embellishments, a front slit, and simple black sandals.

Why: Like the looks Blanchett often selects, Stone’s gown is a little conservative, but with a few quirky details. The wintry velvet contrasts with delicate chiffon sleeves; it’s accented by a funky geometric-printed metallic trim and beading. (For the red carpet, Stone foregoes the marabou feather-trimmed collar, which, on the runway, looked like old English court attire by way of a menagerie.) Her hair is simple, her eyes dark and kohl-rimmed, her jewelry minimal, and her shoes even more so. It’s elegant and glamorous and seems to also serve as a reminder that Stone is a serious actress. Just like Cate Blanchett.
