Everything’s Coming Up Marigolds for Emma Stone

At a party celebrating W’s Best Performances issue, the Golden Globe nominee continues to execute expert moves in the style department.

In La La Land, Emma Stone plays an aspiring actress named Mia who crosses paths — three times, to be precise — with a struggling jazz pianist named Sebastian in modern-day Los Angeles. It’s both a contemporary reimagining of classic Hollywood movie-musicals and an entirely original meditation on the tension between past and present. It’s also, in many ways, a love letter to showbiz and its American cinematic capital. And, in addition to the myriad awards it’s predicted to go up for as awards season progresses, it’s earned a Best Actress nomination for its leading lady, Emma Stone, who has packed her movie star finest to walk the red carpet in support of the film. She’s proven her style bona fides at an expert level, so we recommend against trying this latest, a radiant Gucci look, at home.

Who: Emma Stone.

When: Thursday, January 5.

Where: The pre-Golden Globes party celebrating W Magazine’s Best Performances issue at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles, California.

What: A one-shouldered, marigold-yellow dress with a fuchsia floral pattern by Gucci paired with pink metallic Gucci sandals and a box clutch.

Why: With alabaster skin and rich red hair, Emma Stone has the natural looks of a woman who can pull off the toughest colors. Chartreuse? No problem. Electric blue? Easy. She’s favored this marigold tone in the past — as seen on the runways at Rochas and Giambattista Valli — and it’s a tried-and-true tone she returns to in the hands of Alessandro Michele for W’s Best Performances party. It’s a shade more yellow than the looks she’s worn in the past, but that makes it no less effective; the delicate pink floral pattern running across the dress and the ruffles adorning the edges soften the look and double down on the whole floral theme. Marigolds, little pink blossoms, a whole bouquet. Then, just because, some iridescent pink sandals. When you’re Golden Globe-slash-soon to be Oscar-nominee Emma Stone, it’s just another red carpet.
