Morning at the Museum

On Friday morning, a crew of formidable instagrammers—including journalist Nana Hagel, who moved from Copenhagen to New York after landing an internship through the app, the artist Stephen Shore, and writer-slash-girl-about-town Stephanie LaCava—visited MoMA PS1 before hours to get the perfect shot of the venue—one without a crowd. Dave Krugman, subject of the New York Times‘s exploration of the #empty phenomenon, was also on hand, photographing, filtering, and uploading images to his increasingly popular feed. Meanwhile, MoMA PS1’s director Klaus Biesenbach, an avid Instagrammer in his own right, talked about communicating through images and gave a thrilling speech on Christoph Schlingensief’s “The Stairlift to Heaven” from the ascending work. Amongst these pros there were a few amateurs (myself included), prompting guards to warn against flash photography. As if.
