It was not only the first red carpet that Meghan Markle walked with her (feminist) fiancé Prince Harry, but also the first she’s officially walked since leaving television program Suits. So you could certainly read a whole lot into the fact that Markle and Harry showed up hand in hand at the Endeavour Fund Awards today both in, well, suits.

Markle opted for a black Alexander McQueen number with cropped pants, high heels, and a white pussy bow blouse underneath, while Harry went for a regal blue (though not quite royal blue) suit. Though the couple has made multiple public appearances together since announcing their engagement in late November 2017, this marks their first time on a red carpet together and their first official evening engagement together. It’s also Markle’s first red carpet appearance since she finished up promotional duties for Suits last summer (that show, by the way, will go on with Katherine Heigl being brought in part to fill the void left by Markle).

The Endeavor Fund is a offshoot of the The Royal Foundation, a charitable organization started by Prince Harry and brother Prince William in 2009. It was set up to support “recovery of wounded, injured and sick Servicemen and women.” Kate Middleton joined the charity as an equal patron in 2012 after her marriage in 2012, and it seems like a foregone conclusion that Markle will follow suit after her May nuptials to Harry. Indeed, she was reportedly set to present one of the awards during the ceremony held at London’s historic Goldsmiths’ Hall.

Markle’s choice of a pantsuit isn’t exactly another case of breaking tradition. Other Windsor woman have been spotted in them before, but the family, Princess Diana and Middleton included, seems to have a preference for suits of the skirted variety.

Middleton, meanwhile, stuck with the same designer as her soon-to-be-sister-in-law, but went with something from the complete other end of the spectrum: a blush-hued billowing gown with ornate detailing highlighting the shoulders.
