MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER DRESSING

Power Rangers Actress Naomi Scott Can Do It All, From Ultra-Androgynous to Uber-Feminine

The newly crowned Pink Power Ranger has superlative super powers on the red carpet, too.

This is how you do the day-to-night transition. Actress and musician Naomi Scott, star of the new Power Rangers reboot, had the best Wednesday of all of us, first supporting producer Haim Saban — the man behind the original Power Rangers franchise — during his Hollywood Walk of Fame star ceremony, and then taking over the Los Angeles red carpet for the premiere of director Dean Israelite’s reimagining of the classic ’90s television show. Her two looks, styled by Zadrian Smith, presented polar opposites in terms of aesthetic: first, a white Armani suit; then, a fresh-off-the-runway Chanel slip. It just goes to show, the actress has super powers on screen and on the red carpet.

Who: Naomi Scott.

When: Wednesday, March 22.

Where: The Hollywood Walk of Fame star ceremony for Haim Saban in Los Angeles, California.

What: An ivory suit by Armani.

Why: For her first trick on her superlative sartorial Wednesday, Scott elected an ivory-white Armani suit, double-breasted and slightly off-kilter. It’s a conservative, androgynous look that pairs well with Scott’s berry-red lip and loose waves, polished and professional with a slight feminine edge. But she saved some red carpet energy for the main event, the evening’s Power Rangers premiere, opting for the sartorial diametric to the afternoon’s staid Armani.

Who: Naomi Scott.

When: Wednesday, March 22.

Where: The premiere of Power Rangers in Los Angeles, California.

What: A slip dress with a skirt overlay detail by Chanel with black sandals by Tamara Mellon.

Why: As the Pink Power Ranger, Scott plays the most traditionally girlish of the crew — her signifying color being one most often associated with femininity, her high school activity of choice being gymnastics. So it’s in keeping with her character, Kimberly, that Scott elects a daring Chanel look from the Spring 2017 collection. It comprises a black lacy slip dress with a slit skirt layered over the top, paired with black sandals and minimal jewelry. On the runway, the look showed with layers of accessories — draped pearls, a massive double-C Chanel logo pendant, a beige sweater around the shoulders of model Kylie Vonnahme — but Scott opts for something simpler, allowing the already busy look to do its thing. Plus, the whole theme of the Chanel Spring 2017 collection was technology — the venue decked out as a server farm, several models wearing futuristic helmets — which seems a perfect fit for the science fiction extravaganza that is Power Rangers.
