Photographer Billal Taright was one of the lucky few who had access to the Spring 2016 Oscar de la Renta runway show. Here, he talks about his relationship with Oscar de la Renta’s creative director Peter Copping, what it was like backstage, and more.
How did you first meet Peter Copping?
Peter and I met in Paris about 5 years ago. We were introduced by our mutual friend Jane Pendry. I had an interview with him and he decided I should take pictures of his backstage. (At the time, he was at Nina Ricci.) We realized that we have a common passion for interiors and have been taking photographs together of homes we like ever since.
What was your favorite moment at the show?
My favorite moments were the days prior to the show. I love fittings. It's always great to witness a team working together on a collection. Peter has a great energy that makes things easy and smooth. The way he communicates with [stylist] Alex White and his design team was a nice thing to see and capture.
What inspired you to create these images?
I have a very different approach to backstage and reportage, as I insist on shooting film. The quality might be a challenge but I can get something different. Also Peter's world and his aesthetic speak to me. The fabric, the draping, the details are all great elements to play with.
What most surprises you backstage at a fashion show?
Backstage is the least glamorous thing in fashion. The magic happens on the runway. You have to be tough sometimes and forget about people around you and focus on the girls. It gets crazy as soon as the show starts and when the girls return after the finale.
