Sabine Ghanem was at her mother’s house in Beirut last year when she saw a photo of a 12th-century reliquary in a tome on the history of decorative arts. The 29-year-old Londoner, who grew up in Geneva and Beirut, Lebanon, and has a diploma from the Gemological Institute of America, was so taken with the image of the medieval artifact that she made some earrings inspired by the sinuous designs carved on the box’s surface. Eventually an entire collection took shape, including a diamond-and-ruby necklace that doubles as a headpiece and a delicate two-finger ring. Every bauble in Relic, as Ghanem christened the inaugural collection of her line, Sabine G, looks as airy as the flying buttresses on a Gothic cathedral, but the effect is deceptive—they are solid enough to stand the test of time. “People like that it seems to have a history,” she says of her work, which is sold at Bergdorf Goodman in New York and Browns in London. “It sparks a memory, like a family jewel.”
