Sarah Jessica Parker Is ‘Heartbroken’ Over the ‘Sex and the City’ Drama With Kim Cattrall

As I watched all of Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall’s recent late-night show interviews, I couldn’t help but wonder…are Carrie and Samantha legitimately no more?

While it was pretty much assured that Kim Cattrall would never be returning to the Sex and the City franchise even if the stars aligned to bring us a third film, Sarah Jessica Parker confessed on Watch What Happens Live this week that Cattrall’s exit really hurt her feelings.

“[I’m] just heartbroken,” she told Andy Cohen when asked about Cattrall’s very public disavowal of returning to SATC. “I mean, that whole week, you and I spoke about it endlessly, because I was just, I don’t know, I found it very upsetting, because that’s not the way I recall our experience. It’s sad, but I always think that what ties us together is this singular experience. It was a professional experience, but it became personal, because it was years and years of our lives, so I hope that that sort of eclipses anything that’s been recently spoken. That many years spent doing something so special that people had a connection with it is such a privilege.”

This SATC drama escalated last fall when Cattrall flat-out denied a threequel would happen, even though certain other cast members were still holding out for the opportunity. In an interview with Piers Morgan, she denied that her refusal was a negotiating tactic, explaining that she was really hoping to find some creative growth away from the character of Samantha, who she played for more than two decades. “This isn’t about more money, this is not about more scenes, it’s not about any of those things,” she said at the time. “This is about a clear decision, an empowered decision in my life to end one chapter and start another. I’m 61. It’s now.”

A few months later, Parker admitted hearing about Cattrall’s dissatisfaction was “enormously painful.” “I just kept saying, ‘This was an experience I loved. I love those women. We shared this experience. It was a privilege. If that’s what we’re left with, those memories, there are only four of us who…You know?” Parker explained. “But then, all of a sudden, the world shifted, right? I was like, oh, this is ridiculous.”

For what it’s worth, Kim Cattrall recently approved of Ellen DeGeneres’s taking over the role of Samantha Jones.
