The Yelle Effect

The stylish singer talks about being a Jacquemus muse and her Full Moon Fest look.

Yelle frontwoman Julie Budet is as known for her bold ensembles as her band’s infectious electronic beats—and thanks to a blossoming friendship between Budet and designer Simon Porte Jacquemus, that won’t change any time soon. The two finally connected last year after being fans of each other from afar (Budet fell in love with his clothes at Opening Ceremony while the designer cites “Que Veux-Tu” as one of his favorite songs), and have been working together ever since. So when the French pop trio took over the stage at this weekend’s Full Moon Fest in Brooklyn, it’s no surprise Budet chose a Jacquemus design. With the appearance of a two-piece and the ease of a dress, the geometric cobalt number was just right for the occasion marking the rare blue moon. “It’s like the kind of dress I could draw,” says Budet of the flat-shapes that make up the dress’s silhouette. “I like this mix between something childish and really sexy at the same time.” Perhaps the color also drew Budet to the dress. Jacquemus says she’s “kind of obsessed” with another blue dress of his: “It already traveled the world over with her, from a TV appearance in Beijing to Coachella and lots of others in between.” And with Jacquemus long a fan of Yelle’s “freshness, pop, and double-edged humor,” it’s clear the feeling is mutual. “It’s always great for me to express the music through the outfits,” says Budet. “And it’s great when you find someone you can work with super easily.”
