Azzedine Alaïa and His Muses
Azzedine Alaïa has never been known to play by the rules, and he's all the more popular for it. On Sunday, the Tunisian-born designer presented his fall ready-to-wear collection, a full month after Louis Vuitton closed Paris Fashion Week, resisting the scene that surrounds his peers' shows in favor of a smaller, more intimate affair. He released his first collection in 1980, but his popularity didn't take off until the close of the decade, when he began cultivating a legion of chic, high-profile fans like Grace Jones and Naomi Campbell. Campbell has remained a staunch supporter of the label, walking in numerous Alaïa shows and donning her friend's designs on red carpets over the past 25 years. As evidenced in his numerous repeat customers (who also include everyone from the world's top super models like Natalia Vodianova and Stephanie Seymour to pop stars like Rihanna and Lady Gaga), Alaïa fans tend to stick with him — and their red carpet appearances, collected here, profit from the relationship.
